A blast from the past now with a 21st century Handmaid's Tale spin:

'Flora wives' Grin Thanks op, that's made my day.

I love this board. Even when it pisses me off I still love it.

AncientLights · 13/10/2019 13:33

Grin I wonder why they called it Flora - from what I recall, I don't think any flowers have been anywhere near it. Maybe they gave it a girl's name to appeal to 'the housewife' when she was buying for her man who was evidently incapable of shopping for himself, as men had to be left outside shops in the 1970s.

Time for a re-brand methinks. Something a bit more non-binary. Suggestions?

GetbusywiththeFizzee · 13/10/2019 13:56

Fair swap.Demanded women’s sex based rights and left with a tub of Flora ( Proactive for those with high cholesterol ).

merrymouse · 13/10/2019 14:47

Not just sexist. Also heteronormative.

Plus ca change apparently.

MissLawls · 13/10/2019 16:14

Anyone remember the Oxo ads? Gives a meal man appeal? Think Dennis Waterman was in one of them. Talking late 70s/early 70s.

MissLawls · 13/10/2019 16:14

Should be early 80s...

AGnu · 13/10/2019 16:22

I thought Flora weren't in favour of single-sex spaces... This advert clearly shows that men aren't allowed in the women-only shop, otherwise he could've got his own disgusting butter replacement. Have Flora issued a full, grovelling apology & assured anyone concerned about exclusion from single sex spaces that they've seen the error of their ways?

zebrasdontwearbras · 13/10/2019 16:26

Was that Terry Wogan's dulcet tones I heard then? I miss Terry.

Durgasarrow · 14/10/2019 06:47

@AncientLights Intestinal Flora?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 14/10/2019 07:18

That's funny, I was old enough to be aware of things by the tail end of the 70s and I don't recall any of the women in my family leaving the menfolk outside when they went into shops like you'd do with a dog so it doesn't piddle on the floor or go wild with the loo roll.

AnyOldPrion · 14/10/2019 07:32

I wonder why they called it Flora - from what I recall, I don't think any flowers have been anywhere near it.

I think MerryMouse inadvertently answered your question. Back in the day, it was made from sunflower oil.

Now they’ve change it to palm oil, maybe they should call it GreasePalm instead.

dianebrewster · 14/10/2019 08:01

I've started the hashtag #florathemargerineformen - if anyone is still on there!?

AncientLights · 14/10/2019 08:05

Could be about intestinal flora & the microbiome - nah. Not convinced.

Unless they mean it kills more of your intestinal flora than any other similar product on the market. That I'd believe.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 14/10/2019 08:06

We are dreadful stuff back then.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 14/10/2019 08:07

I'd honestly sort of forgotten about Flora and all this has been a blast from the wow is that really how we ate back then past.

Floisme · 14/10/2019 09:02

I suggest 'Palma' as a re-brand. More accurate by the sound of things and has a suitably non binary vibe I think.

DoctorTwo · 14/10/2019 09:03

The margarine for meh.

Floisme · 14/10/2019 09:47

And maybe we could rebrand handmaidens (a term I never much cared for) as Flora wives?

Deadringer · 14/10/2019 09:53

Men had to be left outside shops in the 1970s that has really tickled me, I can't stop laughing. What a pity no one on mumsnet seems to use Flora products it would be lovely to see the company lose revenue because of their stance.
