I think I will challenge this notice seen at local hospital

I saw this in the adolescent (includes under 16s) waiting room when attending a regular clinic this morning.
I mentioned it to the consultant (not his area) who suggested I email and he would pass it on, but hadn't looked at it properly himself.

I want to keep it very short and don't want to affect DS's care or the attitude of the staff towards me.

I thought I would challenge the use of "assigned at birth" and the sex chart being inappropriate (and daft)

I am totally lost with these posters. If a hospital is trying to educate people on sexuality they have totally failed with those posters.
I am so pleased to see that I am not the only person here who finds it all so very confusing.
One of my DC came home from school and said they understood what bisexual, homosexual, asexual and transexual was but what was not clear to my DC was heterosexuality. I thought that was very telling. The school were so full of teaching about all the variables they forgot to mentioned what was the sexuality which actually produces children.
I admit to not being as knowledgeable as many so please don't have a go at me

Surely there's an issue about safeguarding here? Is a waiting room for children below the age of consent the right place for this type of (mis)information? Why is the NHS directing this type of information via noticeboards in waiting rooms? Can they guarantee that this is age appropriate for all children using that waiting room? No sexually abused children for whom this might be excruciating / triggering? No children with SEN for whom this might be age inappropriate?
Some information - especially about sex - is not appropriate for notices - especially where children are concerned.

The poster with the yellow is actually fine, as long as the title is, "Popular expressions people might use to describe how they view their own gender."

You would need a poster next to it defining the sexes male and female with reference to DNA, gametes, sexual reproduction, etc.

yes, Teapot, or alternatively 'some people say they are...'
Maybe OP can amend the poster (I'm thinking a properly printed and laminated piece that could be stuck on)

NameChangeOctober · 08/10/2019 18:30

I think safeguarding is a good approach

I would ask, loudly and embarrassingly, for the nearest nurse to explain the gay sex poster because I don't understand it

boatyardblues · 08/10/2019 19:06

DH just looked at the red poster attached to the OP and said: “where are the ticks? I can’t see any ticks.”

NameChangeOctober · 08/10/2019 19:15

Could the red one be subversive and be saying that all is forbidden?

I'm not sure whether the gay sex poster is trying to say everything is gay sex or nothing is.

Either way it has nothing to do with homosexuality.

nocoolnamesleft · 08/10/2019 19:23

For fuck's sake. In this big shiny centre of excellence, the paediatricians/neonatologists doing the baby checks will not be assigning the babies' gender. They will be identifying their sex. Grant me strength.

AyeRobot · 08/10/2019 19:35

It's produced by Brook who link to Mermaids on their website.

Captured.

The gay sex one is completely meaningless. How on earth are you supposed to work out what it's trying to say?

The other one is bonkers, as usual. I love the gender-fluid definition: "You fluctuate between different genders such as male, female, agender etc." I wonder what multitude of sins that "etc" covers.

Are both the posters produced by Brook?

TemporaryPermanent · 09/10/2019 13:23

God I'd much prefer 'some people are trans, get over it'. Short, defensible, not over scientised.

TemporaryPermanent · 09/10/2019 13:28

Bloody hell, just read the pink one. Um... you laminated that with public money? Looks to me like the person typing it had no idea what the person writing it meant. Or are they literally saying 'anything can be gay sex'? Because that's not true, unless you're trying to eliminate gay sex as a concept. And why would anyone do anything so homophobic?

MockersthefeMANist · 09/10/2019 13:51

The Red/Pink poster is describing a rnage of practises all of which would constitute the crime of sexual activity with a child if carried out with a person under 16.

Qcng · 09/10/2019 14:04

The "Anal Sex" column is surely just grooming??
"Gay people" whether they are F+F or M+M do not need to have anal sex.
Neither do straight F+M people.

What's the obsession with sexual acts performed by adolescents?

forkfun · 09/10/2019 14:04

Why the fuck is 'dyke' on there? There isn't 'fag' or 'tranny'.

Lots of things to say about this, but using language such as 'cuddle' alongside 'anal sex' really is irresponsible. If we are so vague with our language, how can we expect children to understand that one is completely normal between parents and kids and one isn't, for example. (how any of this relates to gay sex is a whole other issue).

RuffleCrow · 09/10/2019 14:21

I would ask about the likely problems for those trying to avoid pregnancy.

allmywhat · 09/10/2019 14:22

I've never been the type of person to giggle at the words "gay sex," not even as a teenager.

...but suddenly now I'm finding the phrase hilarious. Perhaps what they are trying to say is that Gay Sex is an extra-complicated version of noughts and crosses.

Or perhaps it's a to-do list? Only once you've ticked all the boxes are you a true Master of Gay Sex.

Mylittlepony374 · 09/10/2019 14:35

I'm completely confused by all of that, particularly how such bullshit ended up on the wall in a hospital ffs.
I have no real advice but just to say thank you for complaining. This kind of propaganda is damaging and needs to be removed.

Inebriati · 09/10/2019 14:45

Ask them if the hilarious 'gay sex' poster is a Freudian slip;
Red = danger, X = No.

littlbrowndog · 09/10/2019 14:48

Liking sicarios work

Half wits sums it up

scottishbride · 09/10/2019 14:49

I think safeguarding is a reasonable route or there will be a named nurse for child protection, I would contact them. I would say this is inappropriate in a public place. There is a time and place to talk to young people about sex and I would argue that a waiting room isn’t one of them.
And totally agree with pp who said that anal sex does not need to be mentioned at every opportunity.
I am a doctor and if I knew a poster like that was in a waiting room at a clinic I worked in I would ask who to speak to if a patient had questions about it and that as young children often accompany parents or siblings to appointments it is inappropriate for a public waiting area.
