I just seen this on Twitter which is apparently going to be in the Mail on Sunday tomorrow

I’m so, so happy about this. There’s still a long way to go, but this feels like the first proper step on a long road.

boatyardblues · 05/10/2019 22:29

As the first reply under that tweet says, we already have self-ID in practice and by stealth, so the genie needs to be put back in the bottle. I’ll be interested to see how the other parties respond, whether the issues have been recognised more widely in Westminster or whether they’ll double down.

Campervan69 · 05/10/2019 22:29

Yes it does it seems that the Tories might have realised that this might be a way of getting votes away from labour

🥂 thank goodness for that. Now:

  • Truss needs to say why it’s a dangerous and crap idea; and
  • order an immediate review into the EHRC guidance on the application of the Equality Act to single-sex provisions.
grafittiartist · 05/10/2019 22:40

Wonderful.

PierreBezukov · 05/10/2019 22:40

This is good news.

Popchyk · 05/10/2019 22:41

Lots of unnamed sources.

On the plus side it is a piece by the Political Editor of the Mail on Sunday. So it has weight.

And clearly self-ID is already in the long grass. The GEO were supposed to report back from the GRA Consultation in Spring 2019. They've had a year since the consultation closed. And done precisely zero.

Yeahnahyeah · 05/10/2019 22:42

It's a good start. Happened here in NZ earlier this year. But too little, too late IMHO. We have all the issues UK has - trans women in rape and DV refuges, (women who object to this are found somewhere else to go), in prisons etc.

Our govt are looking to fund the expense of changing birth certs, driver's licences etc. This was one of the main arguments TRA's used for self I.D.
Funnily enough the cost is only around $400 which in the scheme of things is hardly life threatening.

AWomanIsEnough · 05/10/2019 22:50

Thank goodness!

PigletJohn · 05/10/2019 22:50

If the Fail On Sunday says it, can it be true?

HandsOffMyRights · 05/10/2019 22:56

Good. Large readership equals more exposure.

More sunlight.

failingatlife · 05/10/2019 23:03

Sounds promising but as I'm in Scotland I worry that the SNP will double down on their plans and use this as an example of how we are so much more progressive than the nasty English Angry

truthisarevolutionaryact · 05/10/2019 23:11

Trouble is this is just the tip of the iceberg. Will the DfE stop funding all these toxic organisations going into schools and grooming children? Will they stop the EHRC guidelines? How will this affect the girl guides with their safeguarding breaching policies?
While I'm pleased about this, so much damage has happened on their watch in the last few years, they need to make real efforts to put that right - especially in relation to children.

Coffeeandchocolate9 · 05/10/2019 23:25

This might be the only thing liz truss has ever done that I agree with!

Campervan69 · 05/10/2019 23:30

The thing is that companies were bringing in self-id on the expectation that it was going to be made into law. However now that is not happening we need to campaign to get the single-sex exemptions under the equalities act enforced.

Its only delayed, as a low priority. Welcome news but its ready to be resurrected another minister or government.

I hope its a misprint that kids as young as 3 can get hormone blockers, but you never know these days.

RedToothBrush · 05/10/2019 23:46

This is electioneering.

It's dead until after the next GE.

But long grass?

That depends on when the next GE is, and who wins it.

As it stands a GE is likely very soon and there is no guarantee over who will win. Polling suggests the Tories but that's not definite.

A change in government could see self ID resurrected immediately.

Coyoacan · 05/10/2019 23:47

Excellent news, in no small part thanks to this board

CaptainKirksSpikeyGhost · 05/10/2019 23:50

It's delayed probably until November, that month keeps coming up.

JoyceJeffries · 05/10/2019 23:57

I’m also in Scotland and I worry that it will make the SNP even more determined to go down that route as they are so desperate to appear different to the English.

Thingybob · 05/10/2019 23:59

Thank you Liz Truss. It may only appear small step but she has been much braver than any other cabinet member to date.

TruthOnTrial · 05/10/2019 23:59

She disagrees with the growing numbers of young children transitioning. Wants it stopped.

Someone who is speakibg sense in all the dangerous madness. All these poor kids.

Its heart-breaking

TerfTalk · 06/10/2019 00:00

The Tories would never have implemented this anyway. Their voters would hate it.

AugustL · 06/10/2019 00:53

I'm confused.
"the Secretary of State's belief that adults should be given full freedom to decide how they want to live their lives and should not face barriers to doing so"

  • Does this not still sound like self-id for adults is on the table? Full freedom to decide, No barriers = getting rid of what is currently required for a GRC?? The majority of the article was about concerns for children and their medicalisation. Which the reforms of the GRA were nothing to do with. Not directly anyway. I'm confused about this article.
