Don't know how many of you listen to 6music, but just now on the Radcliffe and Maconie show, they talked about the potential for establishment of gender neutral categories for the Brit awards (I think) and were fairly critical about it. Specifically said female categories were set up to give women a fair and equal chance of winning awards in a male dominated industry. And felt that potentially from a female perspective this might be a retrograde step. Interesting.
And Mark Radcliffe also mentioned in the same piece with a degree of bemusement that the Old Vic were installing gender neutral toilets, whilst maintaining urinals...

Thought it was interesting.

I've always loved Radcliffe and Maconie. Best taste in music at BBC6. Now i love them even more. Smile

Singing to the chorus I know... but I love them both Smile

I love them too. I wonder how many young folk listen to them.

they are both very civilised men. I'm not at all surprised to hear that they can spot the issues for women implicit in 'gender neutral'

and they're pretty good radio presenters too...

I miss them so much, and have always recognised their ability to spot and stop sexism on their watch. They get it.

workshyfop · 05/10/2019 09:19

Hurrah for civilised men. If only there were more of them.

There's an example of what happens when you abolish female categories in the Grammy Awards. They went "gender neutral" from 2013 onwards and have had barely any female winners. It's dead easy to explain, too. Gender neutral defaults to male, because male is the default for most things. We have to actually remind people of women to get away from that. So anything that allows people to ignore women, like abolishing specific female categories, will end up benefiting men.
