New NHS guidance on same sex accommodation

The guidance starts out well. '1.2 Guidance statement: Providers of NHS-funded care are expected to have a zero-tolerance approach to mixed-sex accommodation, except where it is in the overall best interest of all patients affected.'

But then there is Annex B, which says 'Trans people should be accommodated according to their presentation: the way they dress, and the name and pronouns they currently use. This may not always accord with the physical sex appearance of the chest or genitalia. It does not depend on their having a gender recognition certificate (GRC) or legal name change. It applies to toilet and bathing facilities (except, for instance, that preoperative trans people should not share open shower facilities).' Annex B was apparently written with input from the Government Equalities Office.

NHS accommodation is now mixed sex accommodation with allocations based on pronouns.

So, not mixed sex, but mixed sex.

TerfTalk · 30/09/2019 17:37

This is just cruel. I don’t consent to this. Sad

KatvonHostileExtremist · 30/09/2019 17:44

Living temporarily as the opposite gender gets you on women's single sex wards? Right.

That sounds sensible. Can't see any sort of problem arising there.

Is there any other medical situation where the views of a none gillick competent child outweighs that of their parents?

Different genital or breast sex appearance is not a bar to this

Jesus fucking Christ. In a document about same sex accommodation.

Needmoresleep · 30/09/2019 17:49

My mother has just died, after 10 years of living with dementia. Hospital was always such a difficult and frightening environment. Mixed sex wards would further reduced her dignity and added to her upset.

Have these people no compassion.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 30/09/2019 17:52

I'd sooner wards were fully mixed sex than this.

The last males I wish to share with are the ones who do not accept women not wishing to share with them.

Popchyk · 30/09/2019 17:58

"Non-binary individuals, who do not identify as being male or female, should also be asked discreetly about their preferences, and allocated to the male or female ward according to their choice".

So no need even to claim to be male. "I'm non-binary, so put me in the women's ward" suffices.

i drank alcohol but it's not Drunk Driving

JellySlice · 30/09/2019 18:04

It applies to toilet and bathing facilities (except, for instance, that preoperative trans people should not share open shower facilities).

Does this mean that TW who have penises should not share open shower facilities with females?

Very wishy-washy and unclear.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 30/09/2019 18:05

So they don’t know the difference between sex and gender? Well that’s rather startling.

Popchyk · 30/09/2019 18:09

Oh, and the large numbers of young females who identify as male?

Stick 'em in the adult men's ward.

But don't worry, sexual assault never happens in hospitals.

They have got to be fucking kidding!

MouthyHarpy · 30/09/2019 18:25

The last males I wish to share with are the ones who do not accept women not wishing to share with them.

I get your point here - decent normal men are as reluctant as women to be in mixed-sex wards.

Ereshkigal · 30/09/2019 18:25

Have these people no compassion.

No, they don't. There was some shitty PN article saying how Matt Hancock had said some MTFs wouldn't be put on female wards (based on what?) and the usual MN orbiter TRAs were all throwing up their hands at the horror of it.

You should also see how they are representing the idea of NHS women on MN who don't agree with the raInbow badges (as in the recent thread, also "covered" by PN), they claim they're "not safe" with these bad women working in hospitals.

Ereshkigal · 30/09/2019 18:26

We are going to have to start protesting in the streets I think.

HumberElla · 30/09/2019 18:33

Zero tolerance to mixed sex wards.

That’s a downright lie and resolutely goes against everything we have learned about the importance of same sex wards for dignity and safety for women.

It’s fucking outrageous.

So any man can enter on their say-so, no questions asked. Men’s feelings first. I’m sickened.

smemorata · 30/09/2019 18:36

So what about sex being a protected characteristic? That just doesn't exist anymore. It can't be legal to ignore it.

HumberElla · 30/09/2019 18:38

This is where enforced ideology and wearing rainbow badges gets you. It’s all lovely and nice and inclusive.

Nope.

ErrolTheDragon · 30/09/2019 18:41

Several decades ago, mixed sex geriatric wards weren't uncommon. A great uncle was in one, along with a nun who apparently thought she'd gone to hell.

Doyoumind · 30/09/2019 18:41

Surely there aren't even suitable facilities in or close to some wards though. Are there men's showers on a maternity ward for trans men giving birth to use? Do they now have to be introduced?

truthisarevolutionaryact · 30/09/2019 18:43

If the Equality Act allows for sex segregated spaces then why aren't hospital wards where women are often undressed, receiving treatment and vulnerable included in this? Is it just the usual creeps having regulatory captured the NHS or is there are actual legal arguments?

LukewarmCustard · 30/09/2019 18:46

The Foreword to the guidance says: 'There are some clinical circumstances where mixed sex accommodation can be justified. These are few, and mainly confined to patients who need highly specialised care, such as that delivered in critical care units.'

Its complete cognitive dissonance.

MIL recently spent a week in a ward with a 'lady' who had a penis, stubble and chest hair. This lady loudly farted at will and scratched her scrotum whilst she wore pink floral pyjama bottoms, no top but open pink gown make up.

This lady's manner was verbally aggressive to staff who were treating her as best they could. Their stand off attitude was more to do with her vile behaviour than her penis!

NewNameGuy · 30/09/2019 18:56

I'm glad the NHS's money is being well spent on this guidance.
Labour will give us more of this "compassionate wokeness"
