Did everyone know that MN now has a surrogacy board?

With posts from single men looking for women willing to be surrogates to "help them get a child"

This just popped up in active:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/surrogacy/3698500-I-am-looking-for-a-surrogate-mother-in-the-UK

Following the pro surrogacy infomercial on the homepage a few months ago MN is taking a very pro surrogacy stance - yet threads on surrogacy even in chat and AIBU are usually very sceptical and aware of the absolutely enormous raft of ethical and practical problems with all surrogacy, with perhaps 30% pro "altruistic" surrogacy, and only a tiny minority in favour of commercial surrogacy...

That’s shocking. So is MN encouraging these men to use MN as a surrogacy agency?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/09/2019 10:41

I thought MN didn't allow people to offer to be, or advertise for surrogates on the boards? I thought the surrogate board was just for support?

Anothernotherone · 22/09/2019 10:45

Sorry forgot to use square brackets for clicky link:

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/surrogacy/3698500-I-am-looking-for-a-surrogate-mother-in-the-UK

I guess this thread needs reporting then if it breaks t&c

Personally I don't think there should be a surrogacy board at all as surrogacy exploits women and children as saleable commodities - "altruistic" or commercial.

Time is running out to respond to the Law Commission Consultation on surrogacy. It's dense and offputting but Nordic Model Now have put together a ten minute download you can use to respond. I can't stress enough the importance of high numbers of negative responses flooding their consultation.
I am currently working on a piece about why I believe the Consultation is deeply flawed and should be abandoned and a bit time short just now.

But I urge you all to take a look at this article from NMN which explains the issues and use the download and encourage as many people as you can to do the same.

Forgot to add - the Consultation closes on 11 October (it was extended from an original date in September).

LangCleg · 22/09/2019 10:57

Everyone do the consultation! PLEASE!

And MNHQ - what are you thinking?

littlbrowndog · 22/09/2019 10:58

Ok will do,

MadamBatty · 22/09/2019 11:03

I think that thread has been zapped now

underthebridgedowntown · 22/09/2019 11:05

It's almost as if MN is somewhere that allows a broad range of opinions, including those that aren't tolerated on other forums...

iklboo · 22/09/2019 11:07

I reported that thread. It's been zapped now.

testing987654321 · 22/09/2019 11:10

So what's the surrogacy board actually for?

DickKerrLadies · 22/09/2019 11:12

It's almost as if MN is somewhere that allows a broad range of opinions, including those that aren't tolerated on other forums..

It doesn't though, as the thread has been deleted.

MN is not a place where men can find wombs to rent. I'm ok with that.

testing987654321 · 22/09/2019 11:16

There is still someone asking for advice about going to Ukraine. Admittedly the only response they've had is someone asking them not to take part in exploitation abroad.

I hate censorship but what happens if people do start replying with positive advice?

iklboo · 22/09/2019 11:23

Although just because some random wants to rent a womb doesn't mean MN supports surrogacy. It's not like you have to have a thread approved before it posts.

Anothernotherone · 22/09/2019 12:06

iklboo having a surrogacy board does though - it's not a post in chat, it's a post on a MN board devoted only to surrogacy.

Thanks for the reminder about the consultation FannyCann

Done

TrainspottingWelsh · 22/09/2019 12:19

Imo, altruistic surrogacy is entirely limited to family, life long best friends etc. Not paying a strangers expenses, let alone commercial surrogacy outside the uk.

As the former group would be too minuscule to warrant a topic of their own, Mn must have reason to believe enough users are ok with the latter type of surrogacy.

testing987654321 · 22/09/2019 12:23

I wonder if they would be happy with people giving advice as to how to use a surrogate from a poor country?

Melroses · 22/09/2019 12:26

Everyone do the consultation! PLEASE!

If, like me, you feel very strongly on this and cannot deal with the style and structure of the consultation document, there is an easy way here: nordicmodelnow.org/2019/08/30/how-to-respond-to-the-uk-surrogacy-consultation-in-10-easy-minutes/ which takes the stress out of it.

FannyCann · 22/09/2019 13:09

Thank you so much everyone who has responded to the consultation and everyone who is raising awareness.

I'm very time poor at present and have so much I want to say about this consultation.

Just quickly - they have not taken any medical advice eg no meetings with RCOG

At the last consultation event one of the lawyers threw up his hands and said we are lawyers not doctors when being questioned about medical matters.

They have not mentioned egg donors AT ALL - he said this would be regulated by HFEA

Quoted rate for life threatening complications is 1-2%

FannyCann · 22/09/2019 13:16

In short there are no medical protections or standards recommended eg no limits on number of surrogate pregnancies a woman can undertake, no mention of egg donors.

I've got to go but will post more later.

2BthatUnnoticed · 22/09/2019 13:29

It has been there for some years, based on the dates. Some on the posts look dodgy (“surrogates in India are cheap - yay!” Meanwhile the Indian government is trying to ban it) but no longer active.

MouseandCat · 22/09/2019 15:25

Consultation completed and sent.
