Is it just me or is there something odd about this Mermaids fundraiser?

It is a US fundraiser (in dollars) for a UK charity.

It has raised 47000 from 124 people, that's an average donation of 380 which seems very high.

Contrast e.g with Louise Moody's fundraiser 11,500 from 456 people (average 25 per person).

Looking at the list of donations there are several 1000 dollar plus anonymous donations with weird comments. Maybe I just don't understand, but it just all seems a bit off?

It is strange - donations in $ € and £. It seems to have started yesterday and has grown astonishingly quickly. There's a suspicious sameness about the comments too. Also, who is the person whose birthday this seems to be celebrating? They seem to think we all know who it is. I certainly don't.

But they can give money to whatever cause they wish. Me - I gave to Louise Moody & Kate Scottow today. I doubt Mermaids would approve of that.

At this point if I see a sexualized anime or other cartoon like avatar I assume the person behind it has a penis.

He is the gamer who got loads of people to donate to Mermaids earlier in the year after the lottery thing. Lots of people donated including famous people like Cher, Neil Gaiman and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The person raising the money has 174 followers. Most celebrities couldn't solicit that much in such a short time. Very odd.

I read a neil gaiman book a few years ago and it had a piece of casual misogyny in it that made me go wtf. Can't remember which book it was. Was it Crazy Hair maybe?

I only liked him 'cos of Douglas Adams anyway...

If you look at the donations there are lots of 'normal' size ones then several for $5k, 10k etc with weird comments like "Hey y'all, I'm trying to help everyone but ko-fi and paypal are being stubborn. I'll make a list of folx and keep tryin. Stay frosty!" "I do not know what is up with you or your paypal, but transaction will simply NOT go through, any alternatives? Everyone else should be good Stay Frosty"

I'd be surprised if those donations were genuine but I don't know how they appear on the site - they are obviously more tech-savvy than me though!

It started over a week ago though. Assume 19 Sept refers to the guy's birthday.

The link in the twitter link is http but the just giving pages are all https (secure).

I tried finding the happy birthday page after going to just giving independantly but couldn't find it.

I'm no expert and only spent a minute so may be wrong - but it looks fishy. I wouldn't click on the link.

It's still live. I expect they are just credit card payments that won't actually go through or will be reversed. They show donations straight away regardless of whether the payment has cleared.

I found another unrelated forum from about 13 years ago complaining of the same thing, 'hoax' donations artificially inflating the total.
