Somebody actually got paid for this idea lol. No need at all.

RufusthebewiIderedreindeer · 14/09/2019 17:35

Shit have i been crossing roads wrong all this time

Was I supposed to wait for a green person in a dress?

I’d have been there for fucking ages

StopThePlanet · 14/09/2019 17:37

I think it is fucking stupid as fuck.

Last I checked walk prompts were for humans (and any other animal capable of deciphering the prompts) regardless of sex.

Hulo · 14/09/2019 17:38

They've been there for ages. I think they're fine. The ones with the two women and with the two men holding hands are cute

“So little Mary, when you want to cross the road you push the button and wait for the Green Sym-bollox formerly known as the Green Man.”

KatiePricesLeftEar · 14/09/2019 17:42

Is it the Symbol that Prince used??

Propertyofhood · 14/09/2019 17:43

Oh my god is that real? 😂

BlindyPeakers · 14/09/2019 17:44

I saw that and was a bit puzzled as it looks like a pro heterosexual thing

Pinkflipflop85 · 14/09/2019 17:44

They've been like that for years.

Propertyofhood · 14/09/2019 17:47

Oh I just looked it up and it's from 2016 and there are lots of different ones to celebrate 'Pride'.

I thought maybe they had changed it because the 'green man' (ie. Someone of unspecified sex but not wearing a dress and having long hair) wasn't inclusive enough or something.

PancakeAndKeith · 14/09/2019 17:50

At least it’s on the other side of the road and not on the fucking post next to you. I hate those ones, you often can’t see them because someone is in the way. There is one I use where you are actively looking behind you to see the symbol.

It’s utter bullshit and not solving any issues or raising any awareness.

Fuma · 14/09/2019 17:55

I also hate the ones on the side. Half the time some gormless student is stood there on their phone ignoring it while the rest of us who actually have to be somewhere at a set time ie work miss it because they're motionless like a wanker.

Fuma · 14/09/2019 17:56

... and they're blocking our vision.

IWouldPreferNotTo · 14/09/2019 17:58

@SmellbowSpaceBowl
If you're confused by that then you probably have a carer to help you cross the road.

IsadoraQuagmire · 14/09/2019 18:03

They've been there for so long I'm used to them and all permutations of couples are represented.
I think they're annoying though.

Ferretyone · 14/09/2019 18:12

On the road into Newmarket there are red and green horses and associated traffic lights. No doubt they pay great attention and push the large button with their nose!

MockersthefeMANist · 14/09/2019 18:19

At the height of the Cultural Revolution in China, the Red Guards turned their attention to traffic lights. Red, they decided, was the colour of the workers and progress, and so meant Go. The lights would be reprogrammed. But you never knew which had been ideologically revised, and which were the reactionary running dog traffic lights of imperialism. Result: Predictable.

My favourite fact of the day: A pedestrian crossing for horses is called a Pegasus crossing.

PancakeAndKeith · 14/09/2019 21:12

And one that allows cyclists and pedestrians is called a toucan crossing, because ‘two can’ cross.

The perfect cautionary tale for our crazy days.

I remember when these first appeared a few years ago. Plenty of people (sans carers - maybe that was the problem Hmm) were confused by them. The symbol of a green, non-sex-specific person walking is fairly universally recognised as a signal to cross the road. This symbol is utterly meaningless in the context of traffic flow / pedestrian rights of way.

What we need is something like this design, from Germany:
