It's appalling how this sort of stuff hasn't really changed. Everything being centred around women being pretty and the perfect partner for a man. Nothing about nurturing ambition, self-esteem and learning about the world.

Manwhohasitall on Twitter is really good at pointing up this absurdity. Somehow, it's still often really shocking to see a common trope rephrased with the sex roles reversed.

Sometimes I wish mumsnet had a like button.

Problem is these magazines are out to make profit, if the two options were on sale which one do you think would actually sell?

Many organisations are making conscious efforts to get girls into science and engineering but its still a struggle. It needs to start at home and in the schools making it cool to be techie.

It's so pernicious we (people in general) don't even notice. Until it's highlighted ruth something like this.

Society (business + patriarchy) have strong motivations for encouraging girls to be insecure, self critical, focussed on their looks etc.

It is happening more with boys/ men as well more, which is bad. Not quite the same dynamic as men and boys are not primarily viewed as sex objects, while women and girls are.
