Bit torn as love to see another woman as Speaker but she has campaigned for TWAW on AWS.

I was just about to look up her PoV on this. That's very disappointing considering her past record on women's rights. I'm also torn.

The Paedophile Information Exchange (PIE) controversy will no doubt re-surface, and rightly so. It is a matter of record that PIE, which campaigned to abolish the age of consent in the guise of advancing rights for children, was affiliated to NCCL (now Liberty) when Harriet Harman was its legal officer.

There are some very disturbing similarities in the MO of other activists seeking to erode legal safeguards, all described in detail in the PIE handbook, including 'jamming' of all opposition. Several prominent rights activists have been jailed for child abuse, including child rape, and others continue to agitate for the dismantling of boundaries.

she is my MP. My understanding is that she's terrified of being de-selected (Momentum have totally taken over the show here and many long standing Labour members are slowly backing away) and so she wasn't going to do anything controversial so she could stand for Speaker.

She's a fucking lawyer and the most senior woman in Parliament. She's been a bloody disgrace on this.

Michelleoftheresistance · 10/09/2019 11:37

Her PIE history alone should exclude her wholly from this.

Who's running the book on whether any national papers will have the guts to mention it?

Redshoeblueshoe · 10/09/2019 11:41

Well the Mail will run with it, again and again.

LoveGrowsWhere · 10/09/2019 12:29

I forgot about PIE. Not so torn now.

She also championed all women shortlists until her husband got selected for a safe seat and went quiet

MockersthefeMANist · 10/09/2019 13:18

Her PIE history alone should exclude her wholly from this.

Not really. A bit of scandal never stopped a candidacy before.

Selwyn Lloyd was up to his neck in the Suez Crisis, and George Thomas was chased out of Wales for his role in the Aberfan cover-up.

Redshoeblueshoe · 10/09/2019 13:19

According to BBC Northwest Lindsay Hoyle is the favourite to take over

MockersthefeMANist · 10/09/2019 13:21

Hoyle is very well-liked as Chairman of Ways and Means (The Speaker's No.2). He's less of an interventionist than Bercow ad tends to throw up his hands and say, 'What can I do? It's the rules...'

Sir Edward Leigh is also putting himself forward. He is a mixed bag, ie Catholic, therefore anti choice, but voted against the war in Iran, defying the Whip; and he is gender critical.
