When feminism supports trans rights, everybody wins – just like in Iceland

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/sep/09/feminism-trans-rights-iceland-uk-movements?

From the article: "Transphobia [...] is deeply rooted in outdated gender norms and misogyny. "

I don't get how transphobia can be rooted in misogyny. Could someone explain this to me?

Owl and Fox are both non-binary, so shouldn’t their pronouns be “they”/ “them”?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 11/09/2019 21:16

Imagine being so up your own backside? 😂 mememememememe im special! So very very special! Look at me! Take notice of me!

Do you think they were of ignored as children by their parents?

ArcheryAnnie · 11/09/2019 23:03

Why is this heterosexual couple being given such mainstream publicity?

Never a truer word spoken, OccasionalKite.

ErrolTheDragon · 11/09/2019 23:20

Maybe they're like the Icelandic Richard and Judy?

ArcheryAnnie · 12/09/2019 00:09

I'd like to see them try and identify as Icelandic for immigration purposes. I am not wholly convinced it would fly.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/09/2019 00:14

Isn't one of them from Iceland? (I got that impression somewhere but could easily be wrong. Come to that, I've never watched richard&judy either)

NotBadConsidering · 12/09/2019 00:47

The thing about Owl that strikes me most of all is that Owl has very little to actually say. I mean, read the article again. Which bits are supposed to explain how the rights are complementary? There’s a whole paragraph about a photographer that adds zero. It’s just an empty article, full of waffle. Considering this is from the person who thinks kids on puberty blockers will be Olympians of the future, solving the sports equality issue, I can’t say I’m surprised. Owl just isn’t very clever.

ArcheryAnnie · 12/09/2019 01:08

If one of them WAS actually from Iceland, that would be the most interesting thing about them!

Needmoresleep · 12/09/2019 03:51

Owl is also known as UGLA STEFANÍA KRISTJÖNUDÓTTIR JÓNSDÓTTIR. A bit of a mouthfull and is chairperson of TransIceland. (Presumably not a supermarket that identifies as Lidl.)

Judging from this article all is not perfect in Iceland either. gayiceland.is/2019/its-important-that-we-as-a-community-come-together/

Needmoresleep · 12/09/2019 04:27

Oh and Ugla means owl in Icelandic apparently.

motorcyclenumptiness · 12/09/2019 07:20

It's not a very interesting anecdote
Throw in a bad syllogism and it'd make the front page of the Guardian

AnyOldPrion · 12/09/2019 08:16

That article NeedMore.

Apparently things are bad for the gay community, including:

In an article purporting to be about human rights:

”Why is it important that we as a community come together and make a firm stand for human rights?”

Point 1 is about intersex people.

And this is Point 2 in which “the queer community” are “not treated equally”

“Sexual health of queer men in particular is very poor, with high numbers of queer men contracting serious STI’s/STD’s, such as syphilis and gonorrhea. While HIV infections are going down all around the world due to medication such as PrEP, it isn’t enough to get queer men to have safer sex. With the rise of chemsex parties, queer men – and trans women in some cases – are engaging into more risky sexual behaviour.”

Really? So these are men choosing to engage in risky behaviour, but their health problems are a sign of their inequality?

Everything is somebody else’s fault....
