On Facebook for objecting to the term "chestfeeding".

For a page called Breastfeeding is the Biological Norm they have a curious aversion to biological reality. 🙄

The NHS still call it breastfeeding

No, biological men cannot produce "breastmilk" that's anywhere near fit for a baby to consume. lascapigliata8.wordpress.com/2018/03/26/analysis-of-study-of-induced-lactation-in-trans-identified-man/
Mother’s breastmilk in context of pregnancy isn’t the same as drug-induced galactorrhea in a man, nor is breastmilk static in composition. It starts as colostrum (birth – 4 days) which is a thick fluid full of fat, vitamins and immunoglobulins. Then it changes to more calorific transitional milk (4 days – 2 weeks), which is high in fat and vitamins, and after that it becomes mature milk which is 90% water.

"Breastfeeding is the biological norm" is a rather exclusionary group name. Not very woke. Don't they feel they should qualify in mind numbing detail how all the people with or without uteruses and not breastfeeding are equally valid human beings?

Brilliant mite, totally agree though now have images of beetles breastfeeding Confused

That's why it's batshit to start with. Men have breasts. I think of the breastplate of a suit of armour.

There are woefully inadequate resources dedicated to breastfeeding anyway: my example of lack of education of health professionals around medications and breastfeeding upthread is the tip of the iceberg - ANYTHING that detracts from real, practical support costs both mothers and children.

The support and education is utterly woeful. I can't believe the lack of support my sil recently had. And then the stupid comments by my (otherwise v nice but clearly naive) bil about their baby's mouth 'not being anatomically right for bf.' He didn't mean tongue tie or anything like that, just the shape of their baby's lips.

Way to go to blame the baby Hmm not to mention ignoring the whole human evolution. Meet the mother of a baby with a cleft palate and talk about anatomy Angry

If anything I was thinking what a great little mouth for feeding he had, butbmy point is that general knowledge and understanding in the general population about bf is rather crap. There's a lot of ignorance from purely it being a non topic unless you want to - really want to - bf.

If you aren't sure but also have to run the gauntlet of woke policed language, you'll feel even more alienated.

A trans man who wants to bf, really wants to bf. And quite frankly has to accept for the purposes of pregnancy and bf they're using their female body. There's no other name for a womb or uterus or cervix ffs.

The lack of inclusion of bf on the pshe or RSE curriculum is shocking.

If it was it might go some way to desexualising breasts.

CharlieParley · 06/09/2019 13:45

The prevalence of female transsexuals is 1 in 34.000, the prevalence of women who identify as trans at most is apparently 1%.

Mastectomy is the most common surgery among women who identify as trans, both because it is relatively risk free with good outcomes and because it goes a long way towards helping them cope with their gender dysphoria.

So, just how many such women go on to actually breastfeed?

For the sake of no more than 1% of women then, 99% have to change their language?

Bearing in mind that the 99% also includes a lot of women who are neuroatypical, a lot for whom English is not their first language and a lot of women who have cognitive issues. All of whom depend on clear unequivocal terms being used to reach them. Do the woke care about supporting these women when they need bf support?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 06/09/2019 13:52

They are trying to police language - and thought. It’s bonkers. Resist!

Her0utdoors · 06/09/2019 14:26

There's been a lot of it about around World Breastfeeding Week this year, lots of pleas to accept ALL forms of feeding a baby breast milk, rightly so, tube fed/sns etc, but there is always a reference to chestfeeding, usually accompanied by a illustration of a woman with a short haircut and facial hair.
There must be alot of pressure on groups to include this.
Reassuringly, a woman on one of the Facebook groups I'm on posted an article critisisng the rise in gender neutral language in maternity services and it received almost complete support.
