Testosterone suppression for transgender women has little effect on reducing muscle strength even after a year of treatment, according to Karolinska Institute's new findings. Researchers say the findings could have important implications for transgender athletes in female sport.

Well here's a pic

"women who have transitioned to men and taken testosterone saw they muscle strength increase by 15 per cent, but they were still not as strong as men who transitioned to be women and took the testosterone blockers"

AnotherNightWatering · 29/08/2019 14:14

Dr Tommy Lundberg, an exercise physiologist at the Karolinska Institute who has led the research, has apparently presented the results at several scientific conferences.

Obviously the conferences didn't have any representatives from the ECB or rugby. Hmm

So who thinks this will be described as fake news?

andyoldlabour · 29/08/2019 14:37

"So who thinks this will be described as fake news?"

Only by "fake women" and their allies.

Pota2 · 29/08/2019 14:43

I have already seen one on twitter. Apparently “muscle mass is not the same as muscle strength”. Lol okay. So no difference in muscle mass yet the strength just drops right off mysteriously. Plus many trans athletes like that marathon runner have not even HAD hormone treatment. Their claim to being a woman is having long hair and wearing makeup which affects sporting performance how? Those high school boys in the US have not taken hormones either.

I am glad that we’re moving away from testosterone though. Testosterone is not what makes you better at sport. Testosterone is what helps your body grow and develop in a certain way, making you stronger and better at sport because you are stronger and have the extra muscle. Testosterone gives you a permanent advantage, not one that only lasts for as long as the hormone is in your body. Natal women have never been exposed to the levels of testosterone that a natal man has and therefore they are at a disadvantage even if the man lowers his levels as an adult.

No. Shit.

It's good this research is being done.

Qcng · 29/08/2019 17:44

It's great that this bullshit is being exposed the The Times.

Male puberty gives sporting advantage. It's not fucking rocket science.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 29/08/2019 18:27

Good comments too. It's great to see people taking the time to explain concepts like regulatory capture and the integration of Stonewall & Mermaids in so many organisations.

Agreed OP and pps. It's no fucking wonder that the UK has lost its measles elimination status

www.itv.com/news/2019-08-29/uk-loses-measles-elimination-status/

When actual science is being ignored and described as fake news.

FWRLurker · 29/08/2019 19:14

Has anyone been able to dig up the original research articles being discussed? Would love to download those to have as resource for debate.

MrGHardy · 29/08/2019 20:04

"But findings by the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, to be published this year, have shown the effect of the hormone treatment in relation to reducing leg muscle strength, is almost neglible for men who transition to become women.

That could be significant in sporting terms because it indicates the physical advantages of biological males are maintained even after transitioning…"

Ooooooh and guess what sport McKinnon participates in...

AnotherNightWatering · 29/08/2019 20:19

This is a tweet from earlier this month by the scientist quoted in The Times

@FWRLurker I haven’t looked but the suggestion is that the article has been accepted for publication but not yet published.

BatShite · 30/08/2019 12:54

So who thinks this will be described as fake news?

'Study was comissioned by terfs therefor is obviously false'
'Terfs were on the research team and altered results'
'Terfs threatened the scientists, so they lied'
'Not many participants, so doesn't show anything' (ignoring that the Harper study they cling onto for dear life had next to no participants, and also had major issues in other ways..ie. results being self reported..)
'Research does not exist, times is a transphobic rag'

etc etc.

Pota2 · 30/08/2019 13:24

BatShite. Yeah, social science study of 17 participants based on self-reporting= incontrovertible proof of suicidality in trans people.
Rigorous scientific study by leading medical science institution= totally rubbish and obviously biased.
