To think that this is degrading

So on Instagram I often see these reality star men in clubs surrounded by girls in underwear/shorts etc waving bottles of alcohol and sparklers. These girls are normally in a semi circle around the guy and dancing while the guy is lapping it all up and cheering with friends. I find this quite degrading. Why the show for buying an expensive bottle of alcohol. Why not just bring it to the table and not have girls parade around like the guy has brought the alcohol and the show from the girls. These girls are young and may just be doing this for a job and money. Anyone think the same?

I agree with you.

Of course its degrading.

This kind of image is also everywhere you look.

And once unseen it does your head in when you see how prevalent it is.

Its only recently I've thought wow that really is degrading and now thinking about bar work in particular the girls have cleavage on show or short dresses and the men wear just shirts and trousers. Girls I used to know used to be shot girls they wore next to nothing and would get harassed all night from various men. It's pretty horrible really!

You're not expecting anyone in Feminism Chat to disagree with you?

There's just so many things like this though. Music videos are really bad too. But I definitely think Instagram and other social media has made things worse.

Perhaps it feels uncomfortable because the images presented on social media are not controlled the way advertisements are.

The Advertising Standards Code means that advertisers could not show a man in designer clothing sitting in an expensive car, holding a bottle of alcohol, and surrounded by adoring women.

An Instagram influencer could post the same image and that would be fine. The blurring of reality TV, reports of celebrity lifestyles, and social media means that it is much harder now to distinguish between active lifestyle choices and subtle pressures. A lot of you tubers are paid for promoting products. A man or woman with a large social media following who posts pictures of themselves surrounded by other attractive people can do quite well financially.
