Can anyone help with a few links to explain Queer theory and origins to a friend in need.
My friend has is experiencing a pile-on at work over use of pronouns in relation to a NB member of staff that she hasn’t even met !
The NB person wants to be referred to as ‘they”within the department My friend expressed natural surprise as she hadn’t come across this coercive pronoun policing before.
She has now been accused of homophobia ( by her colleagues not the NB person that she hasn’t met,) as she can’t understand why she has to refer to them as ‘they’ and has offered to use their first name instead as she is completely confused by this.
This however isn’t good enough for her colleagues and it has left her feeling under attack and bewildered. I think she wants to leave her job.
I would like to help her read and understand what is happening so any links to explain where this has all come from would be gratefully received.

No advice but I'm flossing, as my understanding of the term queer doesn't seem to mean the same thing as most mnetters but i would like to learn.

I thought it was another word for generally referring to LGBT+ people. More recently from mumsnet I've started to associate it with "gender" and non-binary, and trans people.

Your friend it being bullied into compelled speech. She should notify HR and not give into this bullying. 'They' is plural and the colleague is one person and your friend has been perfectly reasonable in suggesting she use the name of the colleague. Hope she stands her ground, good luck to her.

My friend is having a hard time, she is one of the eldest in her place of work. All of this has come as a massive shock. Her coworkers accusations have devastated her.
She works on a zero hours basis so has no contract, they just won’t put her on the rota again l guess.
It’s surreal.

Reading and watching all the links. I need to find something that explain why this person refers to themselves specifically as Non Binary. I think most of the links are too dense, l need something simple for someone who has no idea about this at all.

I am trying not to overwhelm her as she is coming from a position of knowing and experiencing nothing until this work incident.
I am so angry that she has to go through this, she is a brilliant woman, a left wing, ex punk total legend. She doesn’t deserve this.

Thank you everyone. WelshMoth, l am trying my very best to explain this discrimination she is experiencing in the best way possible.
I have some links now, but even l can see that with it all laid out it is completely bewildering.
This friend is someone who has been part of/ instigated huge public events that have benefitted some of the very organisations that she finds herself somehow standing opposite to now.
This isn’t going to be easy for her.
