This article breaks all of MN rules but I hope it is still OK to post it. Please warn me if you think there's a problem. I want to avoid the naughty step this time around.
I won't quote directly from it as it consistently "misgenders" JY.

More sense from MM.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 23/08/2019 06:57

What a fantastic subtitle!?

"The unwaxed 'trans woman'"

Touché, Meghan. 😉

AlessandraAsteriti · 23/08/2019 07:08

What is misgendering anyway? He is a biological male (and it seems, pervert and a pedophile, and a racist too, let us not forget). Since he is not reading this, it is not a matter of courtesy to use a pronoun that does not reflect his sex identity. If Mumsnet thinks that I have to pretend this guy is a woman, I am out of here.

FermatsTheorem · 23/08/2019 07:14

Great article from Meghan, and good to see her in a mainstream publication. I agree with every word (including the pronouns).

DarkNoise · 23/08/2019 07:34

I have posted this question in another thread but perhaps it's worth asking here too:

Sorry I do not mean to derail but genuine question: why are we forced to use pronouns we dot agree with, or where there is evidence of the contrary? My work is evidence based, in simple words, if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, why am I forced to say it's a swan because they say so? This is where dogma and the inquisition begins.

NotTerfNorCis · 23/08/2019 07:38

DarkNoise purely because the TRAs threatened Mumsnet until it caved to their demands.

QueenOfTheAndals · 23/08/2019 07:38

Isn't Yaniv mates with one of Twitter's bigwigs? There's your answer right there...

AlessandraAsteriti · 23/08/2019 07:44

I suggest we all use the Turkish pronoun 'o' which means 'he, she, it'. I imagine trans fundamentalists in Turkey have a hard time, as nobody can misgender them.

FermatsTheorem · 23/08/2019 07:46

Or the Chinese 3rd person pronoun ta which similarly means he or she (different in the written language but not in Pinyin).

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/08/2019 07:47

It’s sad that we see people very publicly with shadows over them and nothing happens. Much suspicion and accusations but no action is taken and the more bold they get.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/08/2019 07:48

In Farsi there is no he or she. So a native speaker can misgender willy nilly in English if not concentrating. Worse in french I suppose.

Lamahaha · 23/08/2019 07:53

I'm always flummoxed when I hear that witnesses and victims are forced to use the pronoun "she" for rapists in court.
Surely doing so completely contradicts their duty to tell the truth as they see it? Surely being forced to tell a lie in court by a judge is serious enough to rebel?

I can't help thinking the outcry would be huge, if a victim simply refused to do so and faced some sort of punishment.

Haven't you read 1984? Orwell foretold this a long time ago.

There is a photo in circulation of a group of people at some public event grinning for a posed picture. One person in the group is Yaniv, another is a Twitter bigwig. I don't know whether the acquaintance goes beyond that. Yaniv is very big on self-promotion and lots of public figures agree to pose for pictures with people they know nothing about.

I read here the other day that something like 20% of Twitter's employees are trans. Have not checked whether this is true, but it would explain a lot.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/08/2019 07:58

20%? But then me wearing my DS old jumper makes me trans according the the mahoosive umbrella. Being trans doesn’t automatically mean you condone this behaviour surely? Why isn’t the community (which isn’t actually a thing?) up in arms and exposing behaviour that harms them?

GCAcademic · 23/08/2019 07:58

I imagine trans fundamentalists in Turkey have a hard time, as nobody can misgender them.

They must be truly oppressed. Let’s hope there is the equivalent of “Sir” and “Ma’am” in Turkish.

NotBadConsidering · 23/08/2019 08:01

Just refer to Yaniv as he. Simple. He’s a he. He’s a male who is vile. If anyone wants to report me, I want evidence from MNHQ that they have contacted Yaniv and are certain Yaniv currently want to be referred to as she. As we’ve seen from the Axe Attacker Amati, things can change. No one who reports me (like the Pathetic Monitors) can be 100% sure Yaniv wants to be referred to as she today. After all, we are hearing ever shifting evidence of what genitalia Yaniv has, so someone that fickle about accurately describing their own anatomy could easily be fickle about what pronouns they use. Just because Yaniv has reported “misgendering” in the past doesn’t mean that still applies [shrugs].

So he’s a he until MNHQ get confirmation from him. Should be easy to clarify on Twitter.

Alternatively, we can stop pandering to vile males who want to force us to talk about them in ways we don’t want to.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 23/08/2019 08:01

Yaniv is very big on self-promotion and lots of public figures agree to pose for pictures with people they know nothing about.

This happened not long ago to Yaniv. He poses with an activist, bleated on social media, lots of people told the activist about JY, activist denounced JY.
Hilarity ensued.

As for a pronoun for JY, I'd suggest a brand new one, Spud.
Eg:
"Spud likes posing for photos and Spud likes hitting with spuddy cane and spud sprints after mobility aid."

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/08/2019 08:02

Can’t we agree that he and she is a sex based description? Gender is a useless thing that can’t be quantified whereas sex is universally understood.

AlessandraAsteriti · 23/08/2019 08:05

GCAcademic The whole pronoun thing is about third person pronouns, so trying to control how we talk about trans, not how we address them (which in English would be the gender neutral 'you' - in Italian the formal pronoun is the third person feminine pronoun 'Lei', ironically, so technically everybody you have to address formally is female). This proves it has nothing to do with courtesy and everything to do with totalitarian thought-control.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 23/08/2019 08:06

That would be good, Fekko. Completely agree.

We're well down the rabbithole if somebody who until a few months ago used the name Jonathan on Twitter now has to be referred to as she/her.

SockMachine · 23/08/2019 08:11

Plainly said, Meghan.

DarkNoise · 23/08/2019 08:13

Thank you all for answering. Is there anything it can be done about the pronouns?

This policing other people's language is very dangerous. I am in favour for some form of moderation (racism, hate, speech) but certainly using a pronoun does not cover it?

Is there anything that can be done to, politely, challenge this rule? TRAs have pulled policy in one way, can we pull it the other way? Apologies if this has been done to death.

I have not even a particularly feminist agenda on this occasion, it's my researcher sense for some form of "truth" for want if a better word that makes this policy seem untenable and indefensible .

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 23/08/2019 08:15

Just use their initials. Repeatedly - is highlights the absurdity of attempting to police language using threats and intimidation.

AnyFucker · 23/08/2019 08:19

Ah, yes
