On last night's episode of "Foreign Correspondent"

iview.abc.net.au/show/foreign-correspondent/series/2019/video/NC1926H015S00

"Ukraine is the new 'go-to' destination for couples desperate to be parents. But Samantha Hawley uncovers an industry out of control that exploits surrogate mothers and leaves babies abandoned."

What an appalling "industry". It not only treats desperately poor women as incubators, but it treats children as commodities as well. "Slavery" is the first word that springs to mind.

If you haven't read the rumplestiskin threads I recommend them.

In Australia at the moment we have very strict surrogacy laws (hence the overseas travel).

I'm not convinced they go far enough.

It is slavery. It is dehumanising.

Did you hear the way women are referred to as carrying someone else's baby? Commissioning parents?

Our own Law Commission has consulted with officials from the Ukraine for the Consultation on the proposed new laws relating to surrogacy. Funny that.

It's the new low cost destination.

FannyCann - The show I mentioned above did manage to touch on how inadequate the Ukraine's laws were, but as it was only half an hour long it couldn't go into much detail.

It went into rather more detail about the human cost of this "industry". Angry

Thanks for posting OP. I'm looking forward to watching this evening (?12 hours behind you).
You may not know but in the UK there is a consultation going on to rewrite the surrogacy laws we have. Not in a good way.

The German woman who gave birth to quadruplets at the age of 65 a few years ago went to the Ukraine as well for it, if I remember that correctly. Anything goes, it seems.
