Kathy Burke's 3 part documentary "All Woman" starts on ITV next Tuesday 13 August. There's an article about it in The Grauniad today which you can read here...

I think it’s absolutely refreshing to see a programme that focuses solely on women, and will definitely be watching.

FormerMediocreMale · 07/08/2019 10:58

I like KB, im glad the program is just about women. She will probably get a lot of stick for it but like she said transwomen need to do their own program.

WhoIsTheFairestOfThemAll · 07/08/2019 11:18

“We talked about maybe talking to trans women in this, but it’s such a huge subject that I, personally, didn’t want it to be just a passing moment,” says Burke. “I think that needs to be a whole separate programme.”

Not quite "transwomen need to do their own programme".

And...

...I think this thought process that they’re trying to wipe out women is a bit ridiculous – it’s a minority of people.”

I think some of you have taken the messages you wanted to hear from this and not listened to what she actually said!

thatdamnedwoman · 07/08/2019 11:29

Burke was in Gimme Gimme with James Dreyfus who's taken a bashing for being GC. That may explain why she's very cautious about saying anything clearly GC herself. This comment:

I think this thought process that they’re trying to wipe out women is a bit ridiculous – it’s a minority of people

is pretty half-arsed. If any bloke with a dick and a beard can legitimately be a woman then that wipes out our sex-based rights. I would have hoped you'd be ever so slightly more thoughtful about it, Kathy.

barelove · 07/08/2019 11:31

She also says I think this thought process that they’re trying to wipe out women is a bit ridiculous – it’s a minority of people. Obviously Kathy hasn't considered the implications of redefining the word Women to include men. It may be a minority of mysoginistic men, but their influence is impacting on all women.

She could do with being invited onto here for a bit of a wake up call Hmm

EndLegalFiction · 07/08/2019 11:56

It was a wee minority of people back in the day, that's how a lot of us start out, be kind etc.

Then the crashing reality of the new trans order sets in with it's gigantic all encompassing umbrella and systematic dismantling of safeguarding and the bottom drops out of women's reality as it was previously defined. She isn't there yet, hasn't noticed that personal effect that hits home. Prisons, GGuides, School policy, Sport, Refuges - we all have one story stuck out as grossly unfair that gave us reason to read on and mobilise.

I hope she gets here soon.

WhoIsTheFairestOfThemAll · 07/08/2019 12:47

Obviously Kathy hasn't considered the implications of redefining the word Women to include men. It may be a minority of mysoginistic men, but their influence is impacting on all women.

Exactly.

Why do the voices of this 'small minority' of men matter so much more than all of women's? Why must we step aside for them? Why must the services and spaces we rely now include them in order to 'affirm' their identity?

LisaVito · 07/08/2019 12:54

Ironically she 'dragged up' or more like, 'dragged down' to play Perry with Harry Enfield. I'd hope she would have thought a bit harder about how easy it is for anyone to change presentation and claim to be a different sex, and the problems that goes along with that.

popehilarious · 07/08/2019 12:57

I agree is referring to see a programme focusing solely on women, but it's awful that it is such a novelty!

Lovely comment under that Graun piece:

"I contracted C Difficile and while I was still very ill I read in this paper that KB had also had it but was now back to normal. On impulse I found an email address{easily} and wrote to her. I can't really remember the content now, but I think, seeking reassurance that one day I would have my life back. Obviously I expected, if there was any reply, something like polite good wishes from her PA but, and very quickly, I received a long, cheerful and hugely encouraging response from her. What a wonderful woman she is. Thanks again Kathy, and yes you were right, I am fighting fit again. X"

popehilarious · 07/08/2019 12:57

*refreshing, not referring

beagadorsrock · 07/08/2019 13:39

I didn't see it, glanced through the article. Whatever the reason for not including TW, it still doesn't and I think that is positive.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 07/08/2019 13:45

I like to measure people by what they do. KB made a programme about women that only features women. I bet she held out against a fair bit of pressure to include males. Plus she’s talented and bloody hilarious.

rickandmorts · 07/08/2019 14:05

But @BernardBlacksWineIceLolly she had purposefully skirted round a massive issue that all women will be implicated by in the future. I was just reading this article and looking forward to the programme but that comment from her regarding the whole trans issue has really disappointed me.

FormerMediocreMale · 07/08/2019 14:05

Correction they need their own program.

BernardBlacksWineIceLolly · 07/08/2019 14:22

Meh. Not everyone wants to talk about trans issues. Caroline Criado Perez doesn’t either. But measured by the things she does she well understands that males can’t be women

People who want to get media bookings have a fine line to walk. I don’t require full orthodoxy on pain of denounciation. She’s made a programme about women that features only women. That’s pretty damn revolutionary these days and good enough for me

merrymouse · 07/08/2019 14:36

I think she either doesn't want to talk about the issue or doesn't know much about it.

Trans people are not going to wipe out women.

Proposed legislation could make it impossible to recognise women.

merrymouse · 07/08/2019 14:41

recognise women legally that is.

If it were impossible to recognise women Saudi Arabia would never have bothered with guardianship laws.

Doyoumind · 07/08/2019 15:12

She's on Twitter a lot and I would say she's not that clued up on the debate. I like her though and will watch. It's actually on Channel 4.

popehilarious · 07/08/2019 15:59

Agree with Bernard, I don't see why it should suddenly be part of the conversation. Thought this was rather apt:
“With trans people, I just think you can’t help the way you are born, though. You know, it’s DNA, it’s genetics. I’m just glad people can do things about their own happiness."

truthisarevolutionaryact · 07/08/2019 16:11

Another one who agrees with Bernard. She's a brilliant actress and the comments under that article are lovely. I won't define everyone by their views on trans issues, especially as I recognise how much my own views have shifted and developed as I've learnt and understood more.

2Rebecca · 07/08/2019 16:33

Interesting the Guardian doesn't mention the role I mainly know her from which is playing teenage boy Perry in Kevin and Perry / Kevin the teenager. If she's doing a series on women then covering transmen would be more appropriate than transwomen.

ElizaDee · 07/08/2019 16:35

PEG (profanity embroidery group) are in this. I want to join PEG so much but know I won't bother going after work.

mimivanne · 07/08/2019 16:43

I agree with Bernard , my sense was that women are more important to Kathy than the 'minority'

Caucho · 07/08/2019 18:05

I just read the trans bit as a really shit and typical Guardian shoehorn (why no Trans shock horror) and she tried to brush it off diplomatically.

Are we going to have this everytime when there’s a programme about women? What she said was true. They are tiny minority and if you’re doing a show with say 10 people there is zero reason to have to include a trans women each time as that would be a massive over representation. They’re not 10%.

Anyway a lot of it was about growing up as a woman and talking about their childhood and most trans people don’t even have that experience being men. Will change though with all these new kids

LizzieSiddal · 07/08/2019 20:43

With trans people, I just think you can’t help the way you are born, though. You know, it’s DNA, it’s genetics. I’m just glad people can do things about their own happiness.

I think that’s a very forthright statement but of course she had to balance it or she’d be hounded by TRAs.

I’m so pleased she’s making a programme about women.
