Have you all seen what's in the news? A /woman/ has illegally accessed the details of ~100m customers of the credit card company Capital One. I wonder how this crime, committed by a /woman/, will be recorded in the statistics...?

OP thank you for posting this. I'm normally too uninformed to post here but lurk a lot.

When I heard this news this morning, as a woman that works in IT my first thought was how unusual that a woman would do this. You have solved the mystery - I would never have realised the hacker's origins from BBC/RTÉ (I'm in Ireland) coverage.

It's so enraging that this will be reported as a woman's crime.

Exactly.
Downright dangerous territory, would they class this as a crime by a woman if they’d beaten up their female partner?

I'm sure there are plenty of men who would relish the opportunity to have those violent/sexual crimes recorded as "women's crimes"

PicsInRed · 30/07/2019 11:54

Look how women are coming along in the world of tech. It's truly heart warming.

PianoPiano · 30/07/2019 11:55

It does say transgender woman in the Daily Mail.

Babdoc · 30/07/2019 11:56

Is there any effective legal mechanism for women as a class to refuse to accept the slur on womanhood of all these male crimes being laid at our door? Is there a case for it being defamation of women, or inaccurate recording of crime statistics or whatever?
Historians will puzzle over the apparent surge in “female” crime in our era, and wonder how women were actually committing rape etc.

GCAcademic · 30/07/2019 12:08

It does say transgender woman in the Daily Mail.

Interesting. The headline has been changed from earlier this morning, when it did say “woman”.

ByGrabtharsHammarWhatASaving · 30/07/2019 12:30

Even with the word "transgender" in it, so amny of those fucking DM comments are saying "wow a female hacker, that's so cool", or "must be really easy to hack this data if a woman can do it", or just commenting ironically on "her" appearance. I mean, are they fucking thick or something? Do men actually know what women look like, or can they genuinely not tell the difference between women, TW, men in drag, blow up sex dolls, sex robots etc. Is their visual world actually just divided into "things I would or would not fuck"?

placemats · 30/07/2019 12:32

Men know the difference.

However they are the ones calling the shots on this. They know they can. Therefore they do.

koshkat · 30/07/2019 12:36

Interesting headline change. Maybe they were fact checking as it is so hard to tell from the pic...Grin

PianoPiano · 30/07/2019 13:55

And now it just says transgender.

happydappy2 · 30/07/2019 14:08

It Is beyond offensive to record crimes committed by males, as though they were committed by females. Apart from the BBC bias crowdfunder, is there any legal challenges in this country about this issue? Thanks

Hoppinggreen · 30/07/2019 15:43

Why do I keep getting deleted?
I just said that she sounds unwell, I’m using the right pronouns and everything

DpWm · 30/07/2019 16:04

I just clicked the link and the headline and first paragraph both say "transgender" not "woman".
I wonder what happened?

I am quite happy about the change of words I must say.

ChangeControl · 30/07/2019 19:02

I realised it was a TW when the expected critical tweets about how stupid "she" was it for boasting about it were being deleted by tweeters amidst concern for "her"' "mental health"

Initially I was heartened then the penny dropped

Helmetbymidnight · 30/07/2019 19:06

bloody hell, that guardian article- thecontortions theyve gone to to avoid mentioning sex or pronouns there.

so utterly deliberate/'transparent'

ScrimshawTheSecond · 30/07/2019 19:12

Guardian 'individual'. Bet it nearly killed them to even report it, ffs.

Angryresister · 30/07/2019 19:37

To Mumsnet.... How are we supposed to do civil and constructive when this crap is going on? When men are breaking down women's boundaries , when their crimes are reported as women's crimes, when women and girls are not listened to. No I am not going to be civil. I am angry and don't understand why we can't name misogyny for what it is. Enough. Actually of course I know why ....you are under the same pressure to do as they say. Nobody is respecting women ...done with being kind.

Paige is going to prison for a long time. You dont make Amazon look bad and get away with it (data was in AWS S3 buckets accessed via Capital One infrastructure - Capital Ones fault, but people will see it/try and spin it as an AWS/cloud vulnerability). Will be interesting to see which flavour of prison they send this very high profile case to.

Interesting that this article doesn’t used any gendered pronouns, generally just uses ‘Thompson’. CBC Article
