Apologies I can't link, but here are some extracts, from revolutionising healthcare for trans teens

“Hormones and puberty blockers need to happen in primary care,” he says. “Families and kids should not have to wait six months to see a specialist.”

“We have people saying, ‘how can someone be sure about your identity if you’re twelve?’ And one answer is ‘of course you can be right about yourself if you’re twelve.’ The other answer is, who cares If you’re not sure, and you try something and it doesn’t work for you, what is the problem with that?” (talking about puberty blockers)

Georgia Messinger is a co-founder of The Trill Project, which created an app in which young people can find peer support. Though anonymized interactions, Trill allows users to follow conversations around particular tags.

In short-pushing young confused children onto a medical pathway immediately & encouraging them to speak to goodness knows who online....

What makes me so angry about this (I know it isn't a race to the bottom) is the moaning about a 6 month wait. Compare that to anyone trying to access mental health services and that is nothing. And when you do get an appointment they simply shrug their shoulders and say 'Autism. Nothing to do with us.'

I am getting so pissed off with the attitude that they should get what they want immediately, because you know , suicide stats, yet as a parent of an autistic kid who is literally begging for help, gets nothing. Absolutely diddly squat. But I guess him and me aren't brave and stunning so our suffering doesn't matter.

Aaarrgghhh · 21/07/2019 19:08

I don’t get the complaining about wait times. Women have died because of wait times, men have died for same and children. So why should we give out unnecessary surgery and or hormones quickly just because they might try and kill themselves which isn’t even true, men have the highest suicide rates in general and it doesn’t change when they transition.

It wasn't too long ago that I heard of how delays for mastectomies were 'killing' trans men and the delays were caused by women with breast cancer needing life saving treatment but their needs were higher than those with a mostly fatal disease.

It comes from a culture of I want and I want it now so I'm not surprised but I do wish they would stop moaning.

Thanks for the heads up on this .org OP, one on my watch list.

I agree and feel the same when reading reports about trans prisoners housed in male prisons demanding access to "gender affirming" items such as lipstick.

I keep wondering if self-id does come in, as a large part of the argument is that trans isn't a medical issue, would that mean NHS treatment for it would stop? And then I wonder, is that part of a larger plan from certain parties to make more money as for many younger people affected, the goal is to get on a medical pathway.

Second the poster above trying to get help for an autistic child. Apparently it is my responsibility not to let them accidentally kill themselves without any information or help to do this.

Waits in the NHS are normal.

26 months for one appointment.

Another was cancelled twice before finally getting an appointment.
