Observer article that stands up for women!

It's only brief, and it doesn't say much, but by Guardian/Observer standards it's quite radical.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/jul/21/snp-failure-to-defend-abused-politicians-belies-its-caring-image

Of course it sad that an article like this should need to be highlighted and praised, but that's the Guardian for you these days.

It's very complimentary of Joan McAlpine - which is great.

It raises some interesting points and in relation to trans issues is actually quite balanced - which for the guardian is pretty amazing!

JustTurtlesAllTheWayDown · 21/07/2019 10:19

Wow. Didn't expect that.
Cynically though, I expect they'll soon provide a 'counter point' soon where we'll be told that Cherry et al are actually big bad nasties while glossing over and belittling their concerns Hmm
At least we're getting articles calling out abuse of GC women at alI. can't imagine it only a few years ago.

veryboredtoday · 21/07/2019 10:39

It's a good article whilst they don't actually say their support for either side it is calling out the bullying their female MP's are receiving and about bloody time.

QuestaVecchiaCasa · 21/07/2019 10:41

That's interesting, does the Observer/Guardian usually include this paragraph at the end of articles when begging for subscribers?

With women’s rights…

… under attack, The Guardian is committed to reporting on this issue with rigour and will continue to dispel the myths that distort the abortion debate.

Its a bit cheeky coming from them, when their wokey journalists have been at the forefront of undermining a number of protections for women. Perhaps they are noticing that the Times/Sunday Times are pinching some of their readership and its beginning to hurt them in the pocket.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 21/07/2019 10:45

This is just Kevin McKenna writing an SNP Bad article. It's what he does. Continuously.

No mention of the same issues in LibDems, Labour, especially given wee Paddy Harvie Greens.

The Observer will need to do much better to win any plaudits from me.

thatdamnwoman · 21/07/2019 10:50

The trans issue is very well hidden and left till the end, isn't it? And it's the SNP, so no one at the Observer will be terribly interested. Anyone who isn't aware of the debate will probably skim over it or not understand the issues involved — so even a woke editor could safely put that through safe in the knowledge that no one will be peak-transed by it.

Popchyk · 21/07/2019 11:30

The begging bit at the end states:

Reproductive freedom…
… is a basic human right. The Guardian is committed to reporting with rigour for women around the world, who all deserve equal access to reliable, quality healthcare. The vulnerable will be those who suffer most in the war on women we can see unfolding.

War on women you say?

The Observer/Guardian have got some front asking for money to help them battle against the war on women when The Guardian has been at the forefront of destroying women's rights, with its uncritical incessant promotion of transgender ideology. No mainstream publication has done more to bury women's rights in favour of men who claim to be women.

Self-reflection at The Guardian is long overdue.

The brass neck of them asking for money to fight against the war on women. Hmm

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 21/07/2019 11:57

It isn't only men who identify as women the Guardian are happy to throw women under a bus for.

They're quite happy to place patriarchal religions above us when it suits their narrative.

They lost whatever moral compass they may have ever had long ago.

LassOfFyvie · 21/07/2019 12:49

Kevin McKenna is an indie fundamentalist. And a terrible journalist. Here's his take on sexual exploitation of children.

ArnoldWhatshisknickers · 21/07/2019 13:23

How did I know that would be about Govanhill.........

I can't comment on that, Lass, I'd be banned in an instant.

More from the guardian:
www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2019/jun/26/from-first-period-to-menopause-share-physical-experiences-of-life-as-a-woman
“Share your physical experiences of life as a woman”.

I’ll be interested to see what they choose to publish

Did you miss this load of wankers in that second article, OP?

As a transgender man or woman, describe any challenges you have ever faced in regard to life in a woman’s body.

aliasundercover · 21/07/2019 15:16

Oh god ... I did miss it.

I just skimmed because I thought 'even The Guardian cannot claim that trans-women exist in a female body'.
Ffs, there really seems to be no limit to what rubbish they believe.

OP posts:
SlipperyLizard · 21/07/2019 16:03

“As a transgender man or woman” - surely if TWAW and TMAM then they shouldn’t be suggesting that transmen have experienced “life in a woman’s body”?

How confused the grauniad seems to be in its rush to throw women under a bus.

I will be filling the survey in if only to make my views known!

S1naidSucks · 21/07/2019 16:05

I always skim through anything like that, because the TRAs have their sticky fingers over so many things now and let’s face it they practically own the Grubian.

Crimpola · 21/07/2019 16:06

I cannot fucking stand Kevin McKenna.

LassOfFyvie · 21/07/2019 16:21

I cannot fucking stand Kevin McKenna

He is one of those people who if he were to say something I agree with it would disappoint me.

The late Alan Clark MP and Anne Widdecombe were , perhaps surprisingly, strong on animal rights - both opposed the export of live calves. I always thought it strengthened my case to have 2 high Tories on board with a traditionally lefty cause. McKenna on the other hand....
