Mass strip search of US female inmates legal because it was for training.

Women inmates in the US were subject to mass strip search and visual examination of their genitals for new recruit training purposes.
And it's ruled legal because they weren't internally proved.

WTAF America.

And yes, another similar case ruled in the other inmates' favour, but THIS judgement still just happened.

Fuck me that's horrendous. I wish I could believe it was exaggerated or even the worst thing I've heard re the abysmally inhumane treatment of incarcerated people here (I've lived in the USA for over 15 years) but, every time I think I've heard the worst, up comes something like this. It's jarring just how many, otherwise perfectly kind and compassionate, people I know here will just shrug when they hear stories like this and say stuff like: "Well, if they didn't want to be mass strip-searched they shouldn't have committed crimes and got sent to prison."

MockerstheFeManist · 19/07/2019 18:55

It's still the best measure there is of any nation: The way it treats its prisoners.

Fraggling · 19/07/2019 19:00

This is appalling.

Grimbles · 19/07/2019 19:08

Outrageous!

JessicaWakefieldSV · 19/07/2019 19:15

What a disgrace. That is so god damn revolting to read. How can people do that? It’s sick, it really is. There was a story similar recently in NZ in a women’s prison.

ahumanfemale · 20/07/2019 03:54

"Well, if they didn't want to be mass strip-searched they shouldn't have committed crimes and got sent to prison."

I've come across that type of attitude about prison rape too, in the UK.

It's sick. Most of the treatment of inmates in the US appears to be run by people who should be behind bars themselves. We all know the Norway model - or at least those running prisons do but it's just ignored. Yet it seems to have much lower recidivism rates - so works. The only reason to treat people in the way the article outlines (plus all the other things that go on in prisons and are allowed) is because society WANTS that.

Truly sick.

I saw this on twitter earlier. It's still haunting me. The humiliation of having to publicly remove a tampon, then bend over (again, publicly) and open yourself up to have your insides displayed, while prison guards laugh at you and make derogatory comments about your body is just so upsetting to me.

ahumanfemale · 20/07/2019 04:44

Yes it's designed to humiliate. I have heard of similar things being done to male inmates in the US, minus the tampon part obviously. But not en masse like this. And they film it too. I watched a programme about prison systems where they showed some of it happening to a male (black) prisoner. I wish they hadn't shown it.

It makes people disconnect from themselves. I wonder what proportion of US inmates leave prison with no PTSD, or the ones who had it before they went in, leave with it reduced.

Christ wtf, how is this legal

2BthatUnnoticed · 20/07/2019 05:36

WTF!! Can they take it higher legally or was that it (have read my limit of Wapo so cannot access article). Those poor women, I wish I could do something, I’ll donate for the appeal costs if there is one.

ahumanfemale · 20/07/2019 15:43

I just was reminded of this post by Yaniv regarding a ruling in the US. I'm wondering if this uses the same law as was applied to the inmates. Essentially privacy issues are only triggered if you're touched...

Which makes me wonder about the trainee doctors doing internal exams on women who are under general anesthesia for other reasons. (In the US, they stopped a while ago in the U.K.).

That episode sounds so terrifying, making one think of Auswitch.

But on top of that I found in one of the comments below the article:

the Supreme Court issued a decision that prohibited federal prisons from discriminating on the basis of sex, when hiring corrections officers.

Meaning basically that women are locked up in cells where men have the keys.

WombOfOnesOwn · 20/07/2019 16:18

No kidding it's part of recruitment and training. Imagine telling horny would-be rapists that they can do this to a lineup of women, if only they join the prison service!

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 20/07/2019 16:29
Sad

I just don’t know what to say sometimes.

ShagMeRiggins · 20/07/2019 16:29

Not sure why Yaniv was celebrating the ruling that “girls have no rights to ‘visual privacy’ from boys” as Yaniv asserts that Yaniv is a woman. Which as we all know is defined as the adult female version of a girl. Hmm

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 20/07/2019 16:35

I know why! Me, me! I know!

ShagMeRiggins · 20/07/2019 17:03

ShagMe calls on Joxer...

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/07/2019 17:17

I saw this story on FB yesterday. Pretty much everyone was horrified, but one man responded to the story with the laughing emoticon. Tbh, that horrified me and sickened me almost as much as the story.

sackrifice · 20/07/2019 17:35

It really really does bring Germaine Greer's words to life.

In that we don't really realise just how much men hate us.

Really really hate us.

ahumanfemale · 20/07/2019 23:52

sackrifice totally agree. I think it's too much to psychologically bear some times so I completely forget then hit my head against things like this.

Given the bias in the American system of incarceration, I would bet good money that many of these women inmates were women of color (Hispanic, Black etc) and the guards were more likely to be white so we can add racism into the mix of vile misogyny going on here too. Sickening.

Fraggling · 21/07/2019 12:38

Agree inion

It really bothers me that this is essentially an advert to abusive and perverted men to tell them where to go work.
