Response from Government Equalities Office

I wrote to the GEO a couple of weeks ago.

This is what I wrote.

The Gender Recognition Act online consultation concluded in October 2018. When does the GEO intend to report the results? Original statements were made by the GEO that there would be a report in spring 2019.

Additionally, Penny Mordaunt announced a probe in September 2018 into the large rise in young girls identifying as transgender and seeking hormone and surgical treatment. Has this probe started? Which government and other bodies are involved in this? When will results be published?

Can you tell me the current status of both these things please?

Reply from GEO:

As you know, we ran the public consultation on the Gender Recognition Act from 3 July to 22 October 2018 asking how we might Reform the Act. We had an exceptional response rate to the consultation, receiving over 100,000 responses. We have been rigorously analysing all of these contributions and we will publish a response this year. Legal gender recognition is not a straightforward topic, and we are considering our response with great care, taking into account all of the relevant perspectives.

To answer your second question, the 2018 LGBT Action Plan included a commitment to undertake further research to better understand the increase in young people being referred to Gender Identity Services. Emerging international data suggests that gender diversity in children and young people is more common than previously thought, and we are aware of a rise in the number of young people, particularly girls, referred to gender identity clinics over the last decade.

That is why the Government Equalities Office is commissioning research which will look into why is there an increase in adolescents seeking help on gender identity issues. The research will give us a better understanding of their experiences and reasons for seeking support. This will include a comprehensive international evidence review and analysis of referral data. The National Institute for Health Research and the Equality and Human Rights Commission are also launching their own research. A tender for the next stage of the government research will be released in the coming weeks.

So basically “we don’t care about the damage being caused because its everywhere ner-ner-ner-ner-ner”?

Popchyk · 17/07/2019 17:53

So they've kicked GRA reform into the long grass. Clearly.

They seem to be refusing to acknowledge that Penny Mordaunt announced a probe at all. Hmm

And they are instead tying the research into girls identifying as transgender to the LGBT Action Plan, which was released in July 2018. A year ago. I've had a look at that Action Plan and the only thing it states is a woolly "The Government Equalities Office will gather evidence on the issues faced by people assigned female at birth who transition in adolescence". Says it will look at the issues faced by those who transition, but not research the underlying reasons as to why?

So why exactly did Penny Mordaunt then take it upon herself to launch a probe if it was already covered in the Action Plan?

Anyways, despite the urgency, the GEO seem to have done precisely nothing in a year.

But, don't worry, because they intend to release a tender in a few weeks time. No doubt many lobby groups will be circling like vultures to get their hands on the money to do the "research".

OP posts:
Lettera · 17/07/2019 17:53

And the promised research on girls will now be on 'adolescents' - presumably of both sexes.

Manderleyagain · 17/07/2019 17:57

I wonder what type of research organisations will apply for the tender. I hope there are some sensible people putting together a proposal.

Imnobody4 · 17/07/2019 18:03

No one involved in lobbying should be eligible for the tender. Experience must be in adolescent behaviour , development and societal influences in girls including detransition.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 17/07/2019 18:04

There's blood on their hands if they don't start to properly and thoroughly research what's going on.

Popchyk · 17/07/2019 18:05

I noticed that as well, Lettera.

This new research sounds like it covers adolescents of both sexes.

Which means that it will probably take years.

I mean, we're a year further down the line. And the work hasn't even been started.

Popchyk

If I remember rightly the proposed research was prompted by a 4000% increase in girls being referred to GIDS in a very short period - I can't remember what the period was. Yet again female interests subordinated to the T...

Investigation as number of girls seeking gender transition treatment rises 4,515 percent

www.express.co.uk/news/uk/1018407/gender-transition-treatment-investigation-penny-mordaunt

That was in September 2018.

So, the question is, what happened to that investigation? When Mordaunt came on Mumsnet for a webchat earlier this year, Mordaunt ignored that question.

Presumably the GEO just decided not to bother with it?

The GEO seems to be a sub-branch of Stonewall [ie: Trans Lobby groups] in that it is yet another dept that has been totally captured by Stonewall's [ie: Trans Lobby groups] propaganda.

We should ask what work the GEO has undertaken on behalf of women and girls compared with work undertaken on Stonewall's [ie: Trans Lobby groups] agenda?

Lumene · 19/07/2019 23:21

The GEO is unbelievably biased on GRA related matters. Lobbyists and activists working as civil servants. Bit of a scandal waiting to implode that one.

AnyOldPrion · 19/07/2019 23:40

”international data suggests that gender diversity in children and young people is more common than previously thought,”

This makes it clear that they have already drawn their conclusions. Like Liz Barker and the “starting from the position that transwomen are women” fiasco.

OccasionalKite · 20/07/2019 00:12

For reference, I remember the following recent MN thread, and think it is relevant here:
www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3637750-Transgender-Government-Influence

www.agender.org.uk/
is an organisation within UK government agencies and departments, "covering all aspects of gender reassignment, gender identity, gender expression and Intersex."

No idea why intersex are included, since intersex/ DSD has nothing at all to do with trans ideology, and intersex organisations have asked not to be dragged into this utter shitstorm.

Where are women (adult human females) in all this?

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 20/07/2019 04:56

"The National Institute for Health Research and the Equality and Human Rights Commission are also launching their own research. A tender for the next stage of the government research will be released in the coming weeks".

Well, we all know what that will say, don't we. Their top guy doesn't even know sex is a Protected Characteristic, and they have been desperately trying to conflate sex with Gender Identity for ages, while ignoring and internally scrambling to dodge responding to Fair Play For Women who pointed out their many legal inaccuracies.

TerfOnTheWagon · 20/07/2019 07:27

I emailed my (female Tory) MP about this and her secretary replied to say that Penny M was about to release details of the consultation - and linked in this article!! I now have zero respect for my MP Angry www.pinknews.co.uk/2019/07/04/penny-mordaunt-results-gender-recognition-act-consultation-published-asap/

Emerging international data suggests that gender diversity in children and young people is more common than previously thought

Wtf is this language, "gender diversity" there are 2 sexes and a trillion personalities. Being "gender diverse" (which I read as "gender non conforming") should not mean a visit to the doctors or being given puberty blockers / chest binders etc. It's just normal childhood behaviour.

Lumene · 20/07/2019 07:45

This isn’t a very clean starting point for research into the possibility of ROGD is it? The whole point of the research is to discover why more teenage girls say they want to change sex. Saying the data suggests it’s because there’s more gender diversity kind of misses the whole question to be asked, no?

Mitebiteatnite · 20/07/2019 07:51

I read that pink news link and spotted this little gem at the bottom.

Totally agree but it will go to a lobby group or organisation linked to one, I'm sure. I have no faith in the GEO.

ChattyLion · 20/07/2019 11:15

Thank you for this thread. This is really important. The responsible Secretary of State needs to commit to an impartial tender process and impartial research questions because this is a highly sensitive area and this is our public money being spent on answering very important questions.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 20/07/2019 11:20

Maybe some of the people who raised concerns about GIDS etc will be interested in doing this research? They seem like relevant and well positioned clinicians.

ThePurported · 20/07/2019 12:24

The National Institute for Health Research and the Equality and Human Rights Commission are also launching their own research.

What research is the EHRC launching? ROGD is a public health matter. The EHRC uses research conducted by the likes of Sally Hines. Not helpful.

stumbledin · 20/07/2019 16:11

Part of the problem is the commissioning process. These are rarely open and / or go to contacts, ie the hidden networks that really influence politics. Look at the number of rubbish research that has been published about sex and gender when it starts from the bias of gender (sex) being assigned.

And look at how trans lobby groups dominated the consultation of the GRA in 2004 which many of us weren't even aware of at the time.

This is exactly why The Powers That Be won't let then near it.

This will be a whitewash, of that I have no doubt.
