It's International Non Binary Day

So Twitter tells me.

I see posts from people I can vaguely understand are non binary but am totally confused by many posts of people presenting very much in line with the sterotypical gender related to their sex and saying they don't all use 'they' pronouns. So what the hell is non binary about them?

Genuine question and not intended to be goady. I don't get it. Well, I get that it might appeal to someone trying to be something other than ordinary.

Just had a quick look through on Twitter. It's mostly young women, some who look a bit androgynous, some who don't. The relatively few young men have lipstick, blue or pink hair, and chippy attitudes. It is so obviously a youth trend.

Not sure if anyone has watched The OA. There's a transboy in it, played by a transboy. In the second series this transboy also played a girl. I thought it was weird they agreed to. Then I saw a video of this transboy as themself saying sometimes they liked to wear jewellery and make up to play with gender. It's all so bloody confusing.

The thing that gets me about 'non-binary' is that it just reinforces the sexist, regressive gender binary. By declaring themselves 'non-binary' these people who think and are told that they are so woke, so progressive, so modern, are just propping up gender stereotypes which are damaging for everyone.

HappyPunky · 14/07/2019 18:42

I watched that. I didnt realise that the character was meant to be trans until they mentioned the drugs being taken. I just saw a girl. I thought it would have been a good opportunity to go into detail on what led that character to it.

Jellylegsni · 14/07/2019 18:57

They (punny) want to get non-binary recognised as a category on legal documentation in the UK.

Everyone is "non-binary". It is a ridiculous concept. Nobody lives up 100% to the stereotypes associated with their sex.

Gingerkittykat · 14/07/2019 18:57

In the interview with Piers Morgan
"why do 48% of trans kids attempt suicide (or are suicidal)"

Implication it's all your fault, give us what we want or we will kill ourselves. Classic abuser tactic.

Also very good question. Why are so many trans/ non binary people so disturbed? Trans is apparently no longer a mental disorder but yet so many trans kids are harming themselves.

Doyoumind · 14/07/2019 19:09

Love a comment I saw on that Stonewall thread: Oh I thought it was Sue Pollard for a moment Grin

Check this blog post out if you want to see how ridiculous it's got. In the attached picture, this is what the author says he is compared to all the other splodges in terms of a scale of masculine - feminine (left to right) and intensity (top to bottom). SUCH narcissistic bollocks.

Do these people never get bored thinking about themselves all the time?

MIdgebabe · 14/07/2019 19:55

I think you may find the suicide stats rather over stated by a factor of around 100. Think the times did a rummage to get some actual numbers.

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 14/07/2019 20:02

Young people today need a cause to occupy them. Can you imagine this nonsense in earlier decades when they had things like wars to worry about? Nuclear power? I think my dad was onto something when he said they needed to bring back national service!

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 14/07/2019 20:07

Climate change and brexit would be good for them to focus on.

AlessandraAsteriti · 14/07/2019 20:51

I do not mind teenagers spouting this bollocks, it is their prerogative. But why is everyone designing policy around this bollocks?

DrSusan · 14/07/2019 21:24

@alessandraasteriti Exactly.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 14/07/2019 21:35

it's international non binary day

i am celebrating by wearing an outfit that is half black and half white, and by doing a mime to demonstrate how incredibly interesting I am

Kids are rebelling wrong. Hippies and rockers and mods and punks were in opposition to the government and the police and the teachers. The whole point of being in a counter culture was to say Fuck You to the grown-ups, not to let the grown-ups organise your counter culture for you.

"Neither male nor female: Why some nonbinary people are 'microdosing' hormones.

The goal is to appear "somewhere in the middle" on the gender spectrum, one nonbinary Los Angeles resident said."

AlwaysComingHome · 14/07/2019 22:05

Imagine a hippy going to the police because someone shouted ‘Get yer hair cut!’ at him.

Imagine if the teacher of a punk with a bath plug on a chain around her neck organised an assembly to explain that she now identifies as a bathroom fitting.

Ereshkigal · 14/07/2019 22:07

I recall the cult chant "Transwomen are women! Trans men are men! Non binary is valid!" in one of Fox and Owl's videos of a rally. The first sentence was enthusiastically repeated. The second only slightly less so. The Non Binary one was a confused mumble in response.

It was comedy gold. The video is a BBC series featuring different kinds of modern activism.

Ereshkigal · 14/07/2019 22:08

Do these people never get bored thinking about themselves all the time?

That only happens to lesser mortals, who aren't so fascinating and unique.

Gingerkittykat · 14/07/2019 22:54

This generation is so tame compared to previous ones. It's hard to think that they would have the passion and energy of the punks, march on Greenham Common or chain themselves to trees like Swampy and co in the 90s.

Even counterculture is polite these days.

Voice0fReason · 14/07/2019 23:00

Non-binary and gender-fluid are completely absurd concepts.
They are just trying to make themselves special.

OhMsBeliever · 14/07/2019 23:06

This infuriates me. I've been pretty non-binary (going by all Stonewall etc descriptions) for years. But would I tell anyone? No! Who the hell needs to know that I don't confirm to gender stereotypes? No one. No one bloody cares. Call me her/she for I am a female. Just one who (currently) has short hair and prefers to wear jeans and band t-shirts (though I did wear an actual dress yesterday!)

I wish it was just teenagers, but I know a few married with kids women who are now non-binary. I know not how they have changed from when they were just a normal married mum with kids a few years ago, apart from adopting animal names instead of their actual names (what is with that?!) Attention seeking perhaps? Who can be the wokiest woke person ever? And look down on the likes of us mere females who don't feel a need to shout about our gender non-conformity?

Goosefoot · 14/07/2019 23:07

Most of the young people I meet who say they are non-binary fall into two groups.

Group one is gender non-conforming and a lot of them eventually decide they are trans.

Group two thinks of the word as meaning they reject the validity of gender in dress, or other parts of life. These are the ones that might present in a totally conforming way.

DpWm · 15/07/2019 16:55

Yep. Both groups being self obsessed bores, either male or female, self obsessed bores. (In my experience).
