Bristol uni promoting the idea of a 'girl brain'

See their Instagram page. They're putting up guest posts from someone with the handle 'girl brain boy body'. They also have training talks for staff by the same person with the same title. Such regressive sexist BS.

I was chatting with a colleague about this. She's a great woman - really clever, energetic, caring and practical. We were talking about Jack Munroe, and my colleague was making much of the fact that Jack doesn't identify with male or female. I recognized the middle class enthusiasm for newly discovered wokeness immediately.

I asked, "What do you think means that a gamine young woman, with a female partner, who has had a child and faced poverty, isn't a woman in exactly the same way you are? What makes you a woman, and Jack 'non gender specific'?"

My colleague is a strong woman, and has a strong social conscience, and it didn't take an awful lot of thinking for her to realize that in her eagerness to be right on, she was basically suggesting she was a woman in a way a young lesbian mother wasn't, and that was a pretty shitty conclusion to come to. To her credit, she rethought her conclusions.

But this is where 'lady brain' gets us. Women end up rejecting their own selves and other women are complicit in their own oppression and the oppression of the women who reject the label of woman because they haven't got these mythical 'lady brains'. Talk about divide and conquer...

Just to add - clearly the way the fire thing was explained to really in the induction was bad and totally missed the point! Also, pink brain blue brain stuff can fuck off, obviously.

I agree

However its still ‘ignore the female’ Grin

Maybe it should have been done on accents...or celebs like M&S Grin

truthisarevolutionaryact · 14/07/2019 19:33

There's not a lot to laugh about on this board today but this thread has made me Grin.
While of course acknowledging the predictable sexism and stereotyping and lunacy and.... Sad

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 14/07/2019 19:35

Oh yes, I quite agree that the subtext is terrible and I used to get secretly annoyed by it every Wednesday when they did the fire alarm test! I just wanted to absolve them from being reported to the HSE Grin

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 15/07/2019 00:24

Hang on, aren't they potentially misgendering the (recorded) voices by assigning them as male or female? Who knows how they identify? Bigots.

FannyCann · 15/07/2019 06:08

I'm just Shock at the Male/female voices for fire messages!
I work in a hospital (which had a serious fire in icu a few years ago so they are quite keen on fire training). We have two different ring tones, a brrrring brrrring general warning and non stop if it is near your department. Instructions come via switch/senior management.

But what the hell with different voices? Any voice can say "don't panic, false alarm" and "FIRE, GET THE FUCK OUT". It's the message not whose voice says it!

I'm just amazed anyone would go to the trouble of all the multiple meetings that any agreed system inevitably involves and suggesting this is a jolly good idea, getting it passed, deciding who to use for the recordings and making them. And presumably no one at any stage saying "Hang on....that's bollocks!"

My hospital has a female voice repeatedly announcing “Code 5” for a fire in a different area and “Code 10” for a fire in your immediate area requiring evacuation.
Depressing to realise that a major English city’s university is now more regressively sexist than us, in rural Scotland. Bristol should be ashamed of themselves.

TemporaryPermanent · 15/07/2019 06:52

We have the intermittent vs continuous signal in our hospital too. Better not to have a language based system imo, leaving aside the rank steaming sexism.
