Right, I’m attending one of these (ridiculously titled) events soon.
My employer is fairly inclusive, verging on the woke. D’ya reckon I’ll get I’m bother if I hark on about erasure of lesbians and women’s spaces? Smile

What is an inclusivity hackathon?

What is an inclusivity hackathon?

I'm picturing lots of people trying to find OS vulnerabilities for Black lives matter to exploit and workshops on why Apple's refusal to adopt micro USB is homophobic.

Can you data gather ?
Take a stop watch and
Time everyone who talks and then sum talking time by sex/sexually ty/gender/race/disability

FannyCann · 10/07/2019 20:37

That is a really good idea Midgebabe.
Sit quietly timing and observing and then present the stats the next day.

There is quite a good app called Now Then which is easy to set up and use and provides handy graphs as you go along. Just keep the app open on your phone and tap the relevant category when a new speaker starts.

Are you suggesting OP assumes people's gender?

MIdgebabe · 10/07/2019 20:50

He he. I think people to whom gender is important will let you know.

Should it be #NA or NULL for those who don’t have a gender identity worth talking about?

ZebrasAreBras · 10/07/2019 21:41

Yes, do the data gathering, and report back here - it will be really useful.

My DH had to do an inclusivity training online course a few weeks ago. Because I never stop banging on about this stuff, he got me to sit with him while he did it. I braced myself for the worst... Grin

Well, it was great - it was predominantly on disability, age and sex Shock Not a mention of "gender identity" Shock Shock Gender reassignment was mentioned as one of the protected groups - as it correctly should be. As was sexual orientation. But they seemed to recognise that the majority of workplace discrimination is due to disability, age, maternity and sex/sexual harassment.

DH doesn't work in a particularly woke sector - finance - I imagine that was the reason. But you could have knocked me down with a feather when I saw the correct protected groups in law.

I've been on a hackathon - an IT one.. of course I had a baby strapped to my front at the time, and seeing that, no-one wanted to believe that I knew anything about the topic (which actually I've been working in for 20 years, and am rather good at).

Plus of course, I couldn't do the ridiculous stay till all hours and sleep over, due to aforementioned baby (plus, it was a room of 85% men, and in my experience, it's just not a great idea to have beers and pizza then share a big room with a load of strange men as a geek girl)

I don't like them. No-one does their best work hanging out in a noisy room all day and night. Nothing wrong with a bit of brainstorming, but expecting anything useful to come out of a hackathon is ridiculous (and don't get me started on the idea of luring developers in for a weekend of bug-fixing by offering beer and pizza. I have many thoughts about that, and none of them are complementary)

Data collecting is an excellent idea. I’ll download that timer app.
I’ve also been invited to represent work at a Pride march. Think I’ll customise our rainbow logo t-shirts they’ll give us with a lesbian flag.
