You can tell which subjects are not allowed by the amount of derailers and mansplainers they get

AlwaysComingHome · 09/07/2019 13:50

Not what I've read

Then you read something politically motivated, not scientific.

There’s a long history of people using words like ‘degenerate’ to describe people they think are genetically inferior.

sakura184 · 09/07/2019 13:52

Nope the facts I've read about the Y are completely scientific. The Y is in a terrible state and I just find it ironic because men are so convinced they're superior

sakura184 · 09/07/2019 13:55

I mean if you're going to base the justification of a political system of oppression like patriarchy on women's i inherent inferiority you should surely not get defensive when women discover that biologically they are not inferior at all, far from it

sakura184 · 09/07/2019 13:57

I personally don't think women are superior to men, but I do understand why some women might given what we know about the Y

TheFallenMadonna · 09/07/2019 13:58

Apparently in 2011, opinion was fairly evenly divided in whether the Y chromosome was headed for complete degradation, or whether it had managed to out the brakes on, but the male/female expert split definitely suggests some lack of objectivity...

Look, fish that live in caves will lose their eyes eventually. They are not ‘degenerate’. They do not ‘devolve’. Eyes aren’t merely useless in the dark, they are vulnerable to damage. Losing their eyes isn’t going backwards, it is evolution. Just like when the ancestors of whales and dolphins went back into the sea and their legs evolved into fish-like flippers.

The Y chromosome is evolving. Genes that can’t be passed on to daughters are not merely superfluous, they are prone to damage in much the same way a cave fish’s eye would be. This is streamlining, not degeneracy.

Maybe someone can explain how we would reproduce naturally without the Y chromosome, because if there isn’t, there’s no way for natural selection to select it out.

sakura184 · 09/07/2019 14:02

Nobody is saying the Y isn't essential for reproduction, in fact the whole point of having Y people is so that females can evolve. Ys, however, don't evolve themselves

Who the hell is saying women are inferior? You really seem invested in the idea that one group is superior to the other. Why is that?

TheFallenMadonna · 09/07/2019 14:04

Are you a biologist sakura?

sakura184 · 09/07/2019 14:05

Please read my post bellow about scientist Cordelia Fine and her excellent book detailing all the experiments male scientists have conducted over the centuries in their endless quest to prove women are inferior to men

sakura184 · 09/07/2019 14:06

Sheesh men go on about women being inferior all the time, I guess you haven't been on twitter lately

sakura184 · 09/07/2019 14:08

laws were made on the basis women were inferior -- and women's inferiority was the justification for all sorts . Well this is feminist history 101. It's boring and annoying to make me go over it on a feminist board

AlwaysComingHome · 09/07/2019 14:08

Ys, however, don't evolve themselves

No, it takes two sexes for evolution to work on sexually reproducing species. But since the Y is only passed down the male line, and produced during the generation of sperm, mutations in the Y chromosome occur in the male.

sakura184 · 09/07/2019 14:20

Yes that's what I'm saying. Females need Y people so that their daughters will evolve. With parthenogenesis females wouldn't evolve with each generation. The whole point of males is so that females evolve from generation to generation. Males themselves, however, not only do not evolve, but actually do the opposite and "become more streamlined" with each generation

TheFallenMadonna · 09/07/2019 14:30

It's been a while since I studied Biology, but I'm not sure that makes sense.

sakura184 · 09/07/2019 14:35

The Y is the only chromosome in the human genome which cannot recombine – meaning the Y – that which makes dudes dudes, — can’t share or improve itself (the Y can’t recombine physically, due to the shrivel, and because if the Y tries to recombine with the X, X hurts Y bad). To males, females are the mere conduit for maleness. The Y is passed down male to male to male — the only chromosome in the human genome which functions like a clone.

sakura184 · 09/07/2019 14:36

Sorry about the cross out lines

GottaGetUp · 09/07/2019 14:36

What exactly is your point sakura?

golgiapparatus · 09/07/2019 14:37

Individuals don't evolve. Populations evolve.

golgiapparatus · 09/07/2019 14:37

And the Y chromosome can recombine via crossing over.

sakura184 · 09/07/2019 14:38

Females evolve, males do not

TheFallenMadonna · 09/07/2019 14:39

So when you say "males" in the context of evolution, you actually mean "Y chromosome".

Did you read the link I put above?

sakura184 · 09/07/2019 14:40

My point, I guess l, is that maybe men's collective desire to destroy the planet and bomb the shit out of everything is connected to the fact that they can sense they are on the way out

TheFallenMadonna · 09/07/2019 14:40

You are aware that males have an X chromosome and 44 autosomes, in addition to the Y chromosome?
