Transgender skater fighting to compete www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-48800080

What is going on at the bbc?

I'm obviously having to skirt around the child's actual sex too.

And another thing - when I was a teen I had my head pretty much shaved. I wore blokish clothes (as was the fashion of the day) and on more than one occasion called ‘son’ by elderly ladies.

Should I have lawyered up rather than laugh and say ‘aye granma can ye no see I’m a lass?’

NeurotrashWarrior · 01/07/2019 19:31

Additonally, with weight being such an issue for girls and pressure to make quad jumps especially we ave to consider what is known as the female triad now known as Relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S)

I've heard of bits of this before but not the osteoporosis part though it makes sense as I know this happens in anorexia.

It's just a flaming shit show.

Well, you can see the child’s point. There’s no way a boy could compete in a sport like ice skating while dressed in sequins, wearing make-up, and with long flowing hair.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 01/07/2019 19:53

Yes but we will all have to pretend that it’s the new normal and the child will get a special medal. Like the prom ‘queens’ that are popping up in my social media - makes glammed up to go to their prom and being crowned prom queen - because t’know, they are special. And brave, and stunning (one was really pretty though - although only a ‘girl’ for about 4 hours apparently).

plattercake · 01/07/2019 22:05

And now deletions?!

Sorry thanks Neuro!! I know the feeling. I read it a bit wrong and I am particularly disjointed writing wise right now. Great innit how women have to juggle normal life and also fight for our women's human rights.. just you know as something else to have to do... sheesh.

That female triad info is valuable I think as it another thing that would have to be retracted or denied before more orgs state that TWAW for sport or any other purpose.

Anyway, exasperated now so must go to sleep!

In short, an Afro-French figure skater, Surya Bonaly, seemed to never win at the highest level because of her astonishing ability. There has always been discussion about how her skating wasn't properly feminine, that the competition judges were looking for "graceful ballerina types".

I remember that was always the criticism levelled at Katerina Witt. She had a much more masculine and powerful style of skating, when women's skating is often looking for flowing lines and graceful.

InTropicalTrumpsLand · 02/07/2019 02:34

As per the rules, "Men must wear full length trousers and must not wear tights." However "in Ice Dance, ladies must wear a skirt."

So no, the child would not be able to skate in the Men's category with a skirt (which wouldn't bother me in the least) but in Ladies, they can and do skate without skirts. Alexandra Trusova did so last season, unless you consider that little loose fabric as a skirt.

In the end, it yet again goes back to the stereotype that girls wear dresses and skirts.

Surely a simple change of rules would be a much more sensible suggestion than expecting a male bodied person to compete as a woman.

Oblomov19 · 02/07/2019 06:13

I was saddened to see the other thread on this subject. In another section of MN.

Yeahnahyeah · 02/07/2019 06:15

I am so feckin heartened that a 5-pager on this topic in AIBU has a resounding 100% opposition to the OP's assertion that the child should be able to play in the female team. Smile

NeurotrashWarrior · 02/07/2019 07:20

Oh not seen that. That is heartening.

Praps the bbc are being clever?

Gender stereotypes harm both boys and girls.

OP posts:
LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/07/2019 08:56

1972 ‘hey Fekko - of course you can do things that ‘boys’ do - you’re just as good as they are!’

2019 - ‘Fekko is that a blue lolly you chose? Quick someone call the Tavistock!’

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/07/2019 09:06

I walk to work along oxford street. So many rainbows, balloons, flags. A bin van just went by - rainbow. My bank app - rainbow. My coffee cup - rainbow. Clothes shop - rainbow T-shirt’s and shorts on sale.

What is happening? Where were these fuckers when my sister was bullied for being gay and I was bullied for having a gay sister? Or when gay bars and clubs were targeted? Where the fuck were they?

Slap a bloody rainbow on it and make it Mardi Gras and every man, woman and CHILD wants to join the band.

stucknoue · 02/07/2019 09:07

In skating it's not clear cut as the women compete to different criteria, gymnastics too, being larger framed (male) would potentially hinder you as jumps and strength isn't everything. Male ice skaters are not particularly masculine anyway.

FermatsTheorem · 02/07/2019 09:22

The women compete to different criteria - not in skating according to the Wikipedia entry - exactly the same list of marks, same number of jumps in the routines, same scoring criteria. Gymnastics is very different, singles skating not so.

Male ice skaters are not particularly masculine anyway. What on earth is that supposed to mean? They are very fit, very strong, very muscular, and (as numerous posters have pointed out) routinely land 3 or more quadruple jumps in a routine. Only 3 women skaters are capable of doing even one quadruple jump in their routines.

Yeahnahyeah · 02/07/2019 09:24

*Does a happy dance

AIBU thread up to page 12 now and it's a resounding NO. Nup. Nadda. No.

DtPeabodysLoosePants · 02/07/2019 09:51

@LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD I fucking hate rainbow anything now unless it's in the sky as a result of natural phenomena. It gives me such rage. My DDs school has a large on flying outside the front of the building. One of the teachers is a Mx. I don't even know how to pronounce that and no idea if they are male or female. Pretentious bollocks. Get on with teaching instead of attention seeking.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 02/07/2019 10:38

Oh fekko I so agree.
Where were they all? You know, when it was shit and gay people couldn't even get married. When people didn't even dare sign up to the LGB club at uni. That wasn't that long ago.

It's a new secular festival. And capitalism is licking it's fat lips.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/07/2019 11:51

I walked past a fancy tea shop (sells boxes not cuppas) and even the sodding display on the window was stacks of boxes of tea - arranged in a bloody rainbow pattern.

I may need to wander in at lunchtime and knock it over...

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 02/07/2019 11:52

I think ‘Mx’ actually is pronounced ‘pretentious Bol-laux’. Probably French.

NeverEverAnythingEver · 02/07/2019 12:16

Yeahnahyeah My faith in the world has been slightly restored by that AIBU thread. Smile

NeverEverAnythingEver · 02/07/2019 12:16

Which is not something you say everyday ...

NeurotrashWarrior · 02/07/2019 12:55

Can't flippin find it and keep getting distracted by other aibu threads
