Gah! I am so angry Angry

This month’s Pride event in Edinburgh came days after the Scottish Government again delayed overdue reform of the Gender Recognition Act. It came in the wake of the Scottish Parliament hosting an anti-trans speaker who has been banned from Twitter for violating their policy on abusive and hateful conduct, and after Scotland’s well-respected trans-inclusive women’s and feminist organisations have been effectively accused of putting women at risk in exchange for funding.

I have been accused without any basis whatsoever of misogyny and inciting violence, merely for opposing transphobia in my speech at the march.

It’s dismaying that anyone would turn up to Pride with a placard explicitly opposing the rights of trans people in our own community, or spend hours doing the same thing online, but some people appear sadly determined to persuade us that trans people are a threat to women, and that their human rights conflict.

Patrick Harvey is a misogynist who did deliberately inflame the situation and Edinburgh Pride.

Given that everything he says in this article is a deliberate twisting and distorting of the truth it is evident that this is an MRA movement and nothing to do with "trans rights"

If it was, and trans people were some poor oppressed minority he would be able to make an argument based on fact on logic, rather than penning twisty pieces in the Scotsman about how Scottish women want a return if section 28.

He claims cis is our own (I assume he means GC) definition. This man is a stranger to the truth.

Socrates11 · 01/07/2019 10:27

Made me want to go and read this excellently argued Dr Jane Clare Jones piece again.

"The key thing to understand about trans rights activism is that, unlike gay rights activism, it is not just a movement seeking to ensure that trans people are not discriminated against. It is, rather, a movement committed to a fundamental reconceptualization of the very idea of what makes someone a man or a woman. In theory, this equally affects both men and women, but in practice, almost all the social pressure is coming from trans women towards the idea of ‘woman’ and the rights of women."

Patrick Harvey, without a trace of irony, made a horrendously misogynistic speech, while playing the innocent.

He's a man. Is anyone surprised? He's just another man telling women to sit down and shut up while the men tell us what's what.

InTheHeatofLisbon · 01/07/2019 10:31

Socrates11 excellently argued and perfectly put indeed!

Imnobody4 · 01/07/2019 10:48

Can't read it. Apparently he's being challenged for co-convenor role. Fingers crossed.

DuMondeB · 01/07/2019 11:06

Video evidence exists Patrick, no point in denying your dickbaggery.
We’ve all seen it.

JessicaWakefieldSV · 01/07/2019 11:06

Patrick Harvey, you are being called a misogynist because you say misogynistic things. Men don’t determine what is or isn’t misogynistic, we do.

Popchyk · 01/07/2019 11:14

It always amazes me that the Greens always have so much time to devote to this issue.

Climate catastrophe apparently, and how do they spend their time? Scolding women for talking about women's rights.

If the Greens clearly can't be arsed to put the environment first, then why should anyone else?

JoyceJeffries · 01/07/2019 11:29

For someone who is a list MSP he would do well to remember that women (cunty variety) have the vote.
If he thinks we will forget that he was inciting violence towards women (with video evidence) then he is a bigger prick than I imagined.

Patrick Harvie has led the fight against 'abusive and hateful conduct' for ages:

Why are Green party’s everywhere so full of misogynists? It’s like that in NZ too.

WPUK
'Lesbians at Edinburgh Pride: a personal account'
Jackie Mearns gives this account of her day at Edinburgh Pride.

concludes:
But what did chill me and did stir some actual fear for how I and the others might fare on Pride was the speeches given by MSPs from the top of the open top bus. In particular the words of Patrick Harvie, Green MSP, where he felt the need to apologise for the democratic workings of Parliament, and the decision taken this week to put the brakes on GRA reform until the full due consideration and further deliberation by a broad range of groups affected by these reforms and, importantly, the conflation of sex and gender that has infested our policy making.

He said, “I am sorry that this parliament very recently was used as a platform for transphobic hatred and bigotry”.

This whipped the crowd up onto a bit of a frenzy, since they had already been primed by the previous speeches that whilst the “theme” of this year’s Pride is “Be Yourself”, the main focus (as it’s been for several years) isn’t about the right to love and express that love without prejudice, it is about “trans rights” front and centre.

I can’t remember the last time Lesbians were ever front and centre in anything LGBTQI+++ related – can you?

So, the need for Lesbians taking space IN PRIDE is pressing. For we are being erased.

I felt Patrick Harvie’s speech inflamed an already dangerous situation for Lesbians on Pride. It did make me fearful, since immediately after, some people started shouting about getting the ‘TERFs’ out – it was obvious they meant us. We had already been blocked in by some very tall people wearing ‘Trans’ and ‘Non-Binary’ flags draped over their shoulders – quite literally and intentionally making us and our ‘Lesbian Visibility’ banners invisible.

Thanks to the spittle infused rhetoric espoused by Patrick Harvie MSP, our situation went from hostile to dangerous. I thought politicians had some standards in public life to stick to. Certainly, I don’t expect them to inflame the flames and put people (Lesbians) in danger of mob attack.

I was dismayed to find out later that my sisters who joined the march were harassed by marchers behind them, had bells rung and whistles painfully blown in their ears and even had a missile thrown at them in the shape of a juice bottle, that fortunately missed them but unfortunately hit a tourist photographing the parade.

They left the march of their own volition; unwilling to make their selves a target for hate any longer and fearing that the bells and whistles might turn into blows or worse.

It was obvious this would happen. The marchers had been well and truly whipped up into a ‘righteous’ anger by our MSPs and others who spoke from that open-top bus at the pre march rally.

The rally where Lesbians were intentionally blocked-in and made invisible.

Where women were told they were bigots for standing up for Female Rights and expecting our politicians to do the same;

Where it was made crystal clear to us that LESBIANS ARE NOT ONLY NO LONGER WELCOME BUT ARE NO LONGER SAFE AT PRIDE."

Thanks, Socrates11 for the link to that excellent piece which somehow I managed to miss. PH is a nasty weasel who absolutely wound up the crowds at Edinburgh Pride, playing to his gallery of adolescent fans and endangering the very small lesbian visibility group. I think his remarks on bigtory in the Scottish Parliament contravene the Code of Conduct for MSPs and I've sent aother complaint about him to the Commissioner's Office www.parliament.scot/abouttheparliament/74862.aspx - my second complaint, I was one of the people who complained about him sharing the deeply insulting blog about Joan McAlpine. Don't suppose this complaint will go anywhere either. but maybe if enough of us do it someone, somewhere, will notice.

See similar situation at Lancaster Pride when a group of young people were manipulated into agressive silencing & taunting of a small group of lesbians.

"I am a Lesbian and I Protested Pride. Here’s why…

By SS of ReSisters United UK and Ireland"

(extract)
"Young People Being Misled by Adults

I was later told by an onlooker that this crowd, of mostly teenagers/students, had been encouraged by the male organiser of the event, adult transwomen, who kept their distance, and a drag queen, who themselves did not join in, other than to walk by, pose for a picture. This drag queen, who we understand to be named Ivy Rose, was seen sticking two fingers up at us and then started a chant “Transwomen Matter!” – though nothing about transmen… Isn’t it concerning that they were whispering into the ears of the young people to run across the road, or to chant certain slogans, whilst they, for the most part, stood back? Like sending in the foot soldiers…

Robert Mee, CEO of Lancaster Pride and organiser of the event stood amongst all the young people and said “fuck off you fucking dogs, you’re ruining it”, the swearing was hostile. Some of our group were spat on by the counter protesters and we were all sworn at multiple times.

Police were there but did not keep the mob separate from us – we were surprised by this. We after all numbered just five women holding the banners, and the crowd were hostile." (continues)

Yes Patrick - they are called lesbians.

Remember them? They are a group homosexual women who are exclusively attracted to other women (homosexual meaning same-sex).
By this definition they don't want penises and they should be given the respect and the space - particularly at a Pride March - to feel safe and to not have some jumped up p*** of a politician inciting a croud against them.
In he same city and only weeks after Julie Bindel was assaulted by a trans activist who made repeated threats against "terfs".
Hugely irresponsible by Harvie, one of these days he will apologise to lesbians for his part in our erasure from the 'AGP'GBT
