Antifa attacks editor at quilette by throwing milkshakes with quick drying cement in

Andy Ngo was attacked at an Antifa rally yesterday.

Are people concerned about journalists being attacked? Not everyone it aeems - some think quillete is a fascist publication and he isn’t really a journalist so it’s fine, or that he engineered this to prove a point or even that his violence against trans people (by writing a thread in which he explored whether each trans murder victim was murdered because they were trans) warrants him being actually attacked. This is also being used in a “well if you’re condemning this but haven’t condemned x, y and z, you’re clearly not interested in freedom of speech/journalism”.

Andy Ngo is a trump supporter which goes part way to explaining the hostility but I didn’t not think it was this difficult to condone actual violence.

I really do fear for liberal democracy, it all feels very Weimar republic, 2 extreme ideologies locked in a dance of death.

I agree, there are startling parallels.

The left is worse. The milk- shaking, the Trump demonstrations, the ridiculing and demonising of Leave voters as evil racists is coming from the left. The intolerance of different opinions is a trait of the left.

Not only is the intolerance of the left rarely challenged but it's applauded on social media.

ZebrasAreBras · 30/06/2019 20:36

Far left and far right are both equally dangerous imo. The end results of both (example of each being Maoist China and Nazi Germany) responsible for millions of deaths.

Imnobody4 · 30/06/2019 20:45

They're 2 sides of the same coin IMO. The Right is actually playing it smarter at the moment but the vicious racism and mysoginy is there.

JanesKettle · 30/06/2019 22:10

Attacking a journalist is just not on, and it disgusts me to see violence supporters positioning this to be OK because Ngo is 'not a journalist'. I don't care about his politics, I do know he reports, writes on and is published on a variety of topics, which makes him a writer, and is attacking a writer any better ?

I didn't think it was super fun to be throwing milkshakes on people I disagree with either; protest can be effective without assaulting people. It's lazy protest, imo.

And you know, the next time someone wants to play the intersectionality card on me, I might point them to the direction of progressives attacking, and approving the attack on, a gay Asian man for his politics, and ask for the card to, at least, be played with consistency. Until then, I'll continue to use it narrowly, to help me understand the varied forces acting on the lives of black women.

Also - kind of tired of American intra-politics spilling out into social issues in other countries. So they can send their 'this is linked to T*ERFS" to fuck. Americans generally understand shit about how other countries work - your Repub/Trump/Dem debacles don't apply here, thanks very much, here being AU.

ZebrasAreBras · 30/06/2019 22:28

Yes, the linking to "terfs" is disturbing - stand by for men milk-shaking women attending feminist meetings & events... although, traditionally, they have just used their fists.

LangCleg · 30/06/2019 22:30

Goddess, yes. Endless US context imposed where it doesn't apply.

KatnissEverbeen · 30/06/2019 22:41

This seemed so sadly predictable with the milkshake trend being celebrated. I understand the first man doing it as he had just come out of McDonald's and reacted to racism. A split second decision.

Now the left have become violent and intolerant. How much has this been intended to scare others from touching the subject of trans. It sends a message to everyone.

Tanith · 01/07/2019 12:43

That’s really not going to bother most women. When you consider the messes many of us have to deal with (nappy explosions, vomiting, snotty colds), a milkshake is hardly going to phase us!

SunsetBeetch · 01/07/2019 13:36

The attacker has been identified.

Lots of links between trans activism nd antifa and anarchism, both in the US and the UK. What's that all about?

DanaPhoenix · 01/07/2019 13:45

Sorry Tanith I disagree. I think women (particularly those who've spoken out publicly) should be worried (or at least be cautious). There have been numerous online examples of trans activists and allies claiming GC women are allied with either religious conservatives or right wing activists.

This was a violent attack. Cheered on by media and numerous twitter blue ticks. Antifa have a lot of connections with a group called BAMN, that stands for By Any Means Necessary. That alone should send a chill down your spine.

SunsetBeetch · 01/07/2019 13:50

I agree Dana. Women have already been physically attacked.

Forgot the link for my post above:

And here we have Ross City Antifa, who organised the event. Do those colours look familiar?

They also attacked a couple of older men.

I understand that other antifa groups have attacked elderly men and women, a disabled veterean and a blackman. Some of whom were left wing. They are indiscriminate and out of control.

DanaPhoenix · 01/07/2019 13:58

Yes SunsetBeetch I was going to point out the blatantly obvious, such as the recent attack on Julie Bindel, and the previous attack on Maria MacLachlan (sorry for spelling?). But, hey ho, I decided for once not to go on a rant.... possible first for me.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/07/2019 14:02

Violent intolerance with added moral licensing.

Popchyk · 01/07/2019 14:13

Really awful for that poor journalist. Hope he is okay.

Jess Bradley, NUS Trans officer currently suspended for public masturbation, was involved in the antifa stuff. Lots of the Action for Trans Health crew are in antifa. Sisters Uncut are also allied with Edinburgh Antifa.

This shows ATH, Sisters Uncut and Edinburgh Antifa organising to disrupt a women's meeting in Edinburgh.

I agree that it is worrying for women at the moment. Things aren't going great in the TRA camp in the UK with much more public scrutiny than they've ever had, and the narcissistic rage is ramping up.

Look at that fella who worked himself into a rage for about a week beforehand to go and confront Julie Bindel. TownTattle is in Sisters Uncut. Clearly went there with the intention of attacking Julie. And Maria MacLachlan's attacker saying on social media that he was going to fuck up some TERFs. "No better than fash" as I recall he said.

Seems to be a thing, start with the threats on social media a few days before, get some idiots onside to say that your target deserves it, and that's all the permission these violent men need.

And attacking women is safer than attacking men, of course. That's why cowards do it.

GrumpyCatLives · 01/07/2019 14:49

Even if he is alt-right, that does not make it okay for him to be attacked! I couldn’t watch the video, the few seconds I saw were awful.

GeorgeFayne · 01/07/2019 15:24

As an American, I couldn't agree more that many of my fellow Americans are highly ignorant of the political and social constructs of other countries. Many, but not all.

That said, I think stories like this have worldwide significance and shouldn't be ignored, for the same reasons that I care about Maria Maclachlan being attacked or the police questioning Posie Parker about her tweets. More than ever, we live in a global community, and social media has become the means by which thoughts and practices rapidly spread between countries. We're seeing reflections of the same behaviors and intolerance in both the UK and the US, not to mention that our politicians are listening to the same propaganda. The Equality Act in the US would have much of the same outcomes as self-ID in the UK.

Take, for example, the issue of "treating" children with gender dysphoria. The modern practice of puberty blockers/cross sex hormones originated in Sweden, and made it's way to the US, where it quickly became codified as the standard of care by professional organizations. There is now a push to allow minors covered under our national health insurance policy (Medicaid) to receive gender surgery, (see proposed legislation in the state of Vermont). Should this become the norm in the US and further pushed by WPATH, I have no doubt the pressure on the NHS will mount until they, too, consider these procedures for minors.

All of this matters.

SunsetBeetch · 01/07/2019 16:54

Let's not forget Emily Gorsenski, who actually tussled with real nazis at Charlottesville, who proclaims 'terfs' are just like nazis, and has threatened them, including singling out Graham Linehan and Mumsnet.

I seem to remember the due who wrote the 'terfs are trash' song (one of whom turned out to be a rapist) singing in front of an Antifa flag.

I think we have every reason to fear Antifa, really.

(Not having a go at you, Tanith! Just trying to draw threads together.)

Cement can cause burns because it’s strongly exothermic as it goes off, and if it gets in your eyes it can blind you.

Andy is a tiny, slightly built bloke, and that video of him being attacked shows quite clearly that it wasn’t him at fault.

Let’s hope there are prosecutions over this.

Childrenofthestones · 02/07/2019 07:13

"Cement can cause burns because it’s strongly exothermic as it goes off, and if it gets in your eyes it can blind you."

Which will undoubtedly be why they put it in.
ANTIFA in Portland are currently the violent urban arm of the establishment left.
Could you see a rightwing mob being free to attack reporters, block down town junctions and attack commuters in the street while police stand by and watch on the orders of the Mayor and chief of police?

EweSurname · 02/07/2019 07:18

I have asked MNHQ to amend the title but have no had luck so far - will try again.

It's not confirmed if there was cement, though it is clear there was definitely violence.

There is crossover between extremist TRAs and antifa in the UK. See Tanis/Tara Flik Wolf who attacked Maria McLachlan at Speakers Corner. And the vile people who surrounded Lesley, the black lesbian at May Day, and called her 'terf' and the n word. And the masked up nutters at the Jam Jar who blocked the stairs at the feminist meeting in Bristol. They are entitled, violent, unhinged psychos, who think that they have the 'right' to punch people who disagree with them

Childrenofthestones · 02/07/2019 08:21

" And the vile people who surrounded Lesley, the black lesbian at May Day, and called her 'terf' and the n word."

Really? I hadn't heard that.
I have to say, one thing that always stands out about ANTIFA to me, for an urban based political group, the words of Ch4s John Snow come to mind...."I have never seen so many white people in one place"
