There is a flurry of speculation over the sudden "retirement" of Jonathon Hayes, a leading Sydney endocrinologist. He is claiming to have been forced to retire given the conditions the NSW medical council have placed on him. Both sides are claiming different reasons, and implying different things. He seems to be the only doctor that uses hormone implants for transwomen.

The situation has left many people without access to any treatment.

The main social media response seems to be:
Patient safety = transphobic
Don't gatekeep us bullies etc etc

It all highlights the rapid increase in demand for medical intervention and the lack of agreement about safe practice?

If a doctor feels that regulations are bad, is it normal for him to respond by retiring immediately? I would have thought that a responsible doctor would do his best for his patients within the existing regulations while working to change them?

There's only one trans doctor in the whole of Australia?
You can buy the stuff off the internet easily enough. Not saying one should.

Can't read article bc it's subscription only.

DpWm I couldn't read the first one either but the second link is free to access. It includes a link to the doctor's letter, which is pretty odd, I think. The tone is petulant and he openly asks for political pressure to be put on the Medical Council ("I do intend to pursue the matter further and would appreciate any letters of support").

Why do people keep quoting the DSM? I find the way that they decide what goes into it lacks a certain realistic element (go into a room; he who shouts loudest gets his interpretation in the book) very difficult. I’ve noticed that Trans Activists are very good at shouting loudly.

Sorry, I should have put a bigger gap between the two articles. The first one worked for me once.... dunno strange.
The second one is definitely open.

What other area of medicine is there where healthy people with no mental illness(?!) or physical condition are granted free access to powerful life-altering sterilising drugs? I am surprised he isn’t going the whole hock and say they should be available at the supermarket next to the paracetamol! That would affect his lucrative income but if his clients are given such free reign, what are they paying him for?
