Sarah Honeychurch, a fellow in the Adam Smith Business School at Glasgow University, was among more than 30 academics who signed the letter in last week’s Sunday Times. It registered “disquiet” over a programme run by the charity Stonewall in which “anti-scientific claims are presented . . . as objective fact”.

The guidance includes instructing academics on using gender neutral pronouns such as “zie” and “ey”, as well as insisting that “one in 100 are born with an intersex trait” and that trans women should be allowed to use female changing rooms.

The letter was organised by Kathleen Stock, a professor at Sussex University. Many lecturers believe academic freedom to debate trans issues is being stifled on campus.

And of course calling on them to resign or threatening their positions only goes to prove the last point. Academic freedom to have discourse on “trans issues” is being restricted because those who go against the “guidance” lose their jobs. All with the end result of creating an echo chamber.

I'm not ashamed to say that I pretty much judge entire universities based on how they handle the issue of gender critical women.

Sunkisses · 23/06/2019 05:54

Witch hunt, plain and simple. It was the outrageous silencing and bullying that led me to this trans issue. I thought it was insane that trans activists were trying to shut so many people up. It made me look at it a lot more closely, and the rest is history... I wish there were a way that we could all manifest our support for these people who stand to lose their careers.Maybe we should brainstorm way to support these people here? I just always feel really impotent, raging away on MN, without actually doing anything

Wizbetisanizbet · 23/06/2019 06:03

I bet none of the 1000 academics that signed the counter letter in the Times will have their jobs threatened.

I worry about the quality of teaching in this country if these so called academics tow the party line with Stonewall guidance and are unable to think critically.

The whole thing is insidious

dancingcamper · 23/06/2019 06:22

We need to collate the fallout for all the academics. It will have been widespread involving various complaints made against them, most of which won't make the news.

This silencing needs to be seen as a pattern.

dancingcamper · 23/06/2019 06:25

I have joined a resisters group precisely for this reason, I suggest join or start one in your area.

teawamutu · 23/06/2019 08:06

Would writing letters help? Where to target for best effect?

dancingcamper · 23/06/2019 08:37

Shall we move to the other thread on this? I agree we need to write in support, but not sure who to.

6480 on the other letter--not all UK based.
