Mermaids close relationship with the police

They’re currently in the middle of a shit storm because of their ie. SG’s decision to ally themselves too closely with the police. A backlash is underway and it’s really interesting to watch unfold. Lots of threats to withdraw funding/stop donating. Not sure how to link to the thread on Twitter but it’s there to see if you go on their feed. A certain young Labour Woman’s Officer is very cross about it too.

If I was the type of family that mermaids work with I would be v concerned about them paying any attention to that rag bag of scary animes whose idea of the police makes it sound like many are American. Its a weird online support movement for trans issues. Do you think many of the anime accounts are actually trans or is it just the current thing for them to latch onto?

In some ways, the TRAs are right.

Green's experience with one officer in WYP (a family friend?) leads her to believe that with a little bit of knowledge, police officers are the right people to deal with a distressed child threatening suicide.

In her own case, the officer developed a relationship with Jackie Green by affirmation and ongoing support. (How did he find the time? Was this ethical? Was this good practice?)

Just because it worked for her, she thinks it's a good idea. (And a lucrative income stream).

It's dangerous. It's ludicrous. It's not the police role. A call-taker would probably refer a family to Addolescent Service/Mental Health Crisis Teams anyway.
