Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Won’t somebody think of the poor, scared trans women?

A mediocre journalist who “still lives as a man, but has begun the male-to-female gender transition that will eventually result in becoming a woman” currently has his own column in The Telegraph. Can’t imagine how he got given that gig Hmm.

And this week’s bullshit contribution: Why using the women’s toilets is far scarier for trans women than it is for us.

From the article-

However frightened women may be by our presence, we are way, way more petrified by having to be there.

My first thought being, well they don’t have to be there, do they? They’re bloody well choosing to!

Lots of great comments under that article.

I'm not sure that the Telegraph is woke now. Yesterday, it tagged onto a story about a GCSE question choice the fact that this wasn't "the first exam question that has sparked debate". The article went on to say that GCSE biology students had been asked to identify the "gender" (the Telegraph's quotation marks) shown by a set of chromosomes and to show how (more quotation marks) "gender is inherited" from parents. Scientists complained, pointing out that the correct term is sex, not gender, and that the difference between the two is integral to science.

The article concluded, "Sex refers to biological differences between male and females, including genetics, while "gender" refers to socially constructed roles that men and women are expected to fulfil".

Absolutely accurate, of course, but the selective use of quotation marks didn't indicate wokeness to me!

men are afraid women will laugh at them, women are afraid men will kill them.

Poor man. If he's so afraid, he should use the gents.

Oh gosh, I've just realised who this guy is. Years and years ago there was a journalist called David Thomas (pretty common name, I know) who wrote a book called "Not Guilty: In Defence of the Modern Man" which was an awful whiny thing (I didn't read it, but I read excerpts at the time) about how hard done by men are and how terrible feminists are. It's the same man.

An exceptionally sexist man decides he has to become a woman in order to ... compare and admire handbags? I see.

I suppose there is the theory about handbags and what they represent.

Ali1cedowntherabbithole · 07/06/2019 22:50

The review is very insightful, almost prophetic.

26 years ago, Thomas didn't like the fact that women didn't fancy him men in skirts.

He's still got that chip. And women are still responsible for his misery.

I actually feel a little sorry for him given his lack of insight. The guy might benefit more from counselling, than transitioning, but is unlikely to access what he needs.

FannyCann · 07/06/2019 22:51

I suspect The Telegraph is using him as outrage clickbait as it's the readership least likely to empathise with this man's self quest. I almost wonder if he is in on it.

Grin No he's too self absorbed to be in on it or to realise he is the butt of a massive joke. I definitely think someone who's sick of listening to him droning on has decided to give him the petard to hoist.

littlbrowndog · 07/06/2019 22:59

Seems like it’s just a sexual thing for this guy but now he got the trans gender stuff to latch onto

He can show it freely and expected to applauded for being stunning and brave.

Hey ho

When I have read about men who do those mundane gateway offences that you can't mention here, they get really scared. But they still do it. The adrenaline is part of the thrill, and the getting away with it.

boatyardblues · 07/06/2019 23:21

What does that even mean? "Still lives as a man" - is he talking about clothes, hair, interests - none of which (as we all know only too well) are what makes a person a woman.

Maybe this writer isn’t quite ready to give up 20-45ish% of salary yet to really live the authentic female experience?

Shades of the unforgettable gold lame purse. Grin

The mainstream newspapers (and I include the BBC and alleged broadsheets in there) are just a collection of snide trolls and clickbait now. I suspect they sit there laughing as they enjoy setting their readership up.

David Thomas gets clicks and comments and interaction = goal accomplished.

On this or any other issue the newspapers like manipulating their audience and stirring and playing both sides - it’s like some of the gutter tabloids making a point of having women with Muslim names writing stories abusing immigrants.

I peaked long ago and am glad of it ( and grateful to MN for awareness ) but I’m wary of anyone looking to manipulate strong sincere feelings to their own ends.

The newspapers don’t give a shit about women’s rights - they want to create drama and sell copies.
