What about the women's world cup?!

Hi everyone, I read a couple of threads on the sports bit of Mumsnet and realised I was only reading about men's football. The women's world cup starts on 7th June and it's a really important year for supporting and promoting the game for women and girls. For those that don't know, a bit of history is that the women’s game was huge in the UK between the world wars (crowds of 55,000 with 14,000 waiting outside!), and large numbers of working class factory women playing in teams all over the country over many years - becoming household names and raising lots of money for returned soldiers and mining communities. Then the FA banned women from playing, for 50 years. When the FA finally lifted the ban in the 70s, women players faced horrendous treatment and the game has been struggling to come back ever since.

So it's brilliant that football is having a comeback. Here's where it's on in London londonist.com/london/sport/womens-world-cup-2019-football-where-to-watch-london-screenings

Spain are growing in confidence. I am hoping this continues. (A reaction to a very enthusiastic American crowd. DD, a former camp counsellor, tells me that their chants are really summer camp songs. I am half expecting them to sing Baby Shark.)

The half time sprinklers have caused the humidity to rise still further. Glad I am not playing!

MockerstheFeManist · 24/06/2019 17:59

Be thankful they don't resort to that Nuremburg Rally chant of Yooo-Esssay!

Vamos Chicas!

LimitIsUp · 24/06/2019 18:07

Good grief that USA ex player commentating with the BBC team today when asked at half time just now for her reactions to yesterday's England v Cameroon game - had "great respect" for Cameroon, wtf!

LimitIsUp · 24/06/2019 18:07

Come on Spain!

MockerstheFeManist · 24/06/2019 18:12

Hope Solo is articulate and cogent in her arguments. It is good to hear something dissonant in the echo chamber.

You could say she is being patronising about poor little Cameroon who had it so tough growing up, and the head of womens football at CAF thinks they have brought disgrace on the continent.

But she has a right to her view.

DoctorTwo · 24/06/2019 18:14

Cameroon should've had 2 players sent off. One for the elbow to Nikita Parris' face and the other for the stamp on Steph Houghton. The ref was useless.

I agree with thee PP upthread about Sian Massey, she's one of the best officials in the game regardless of sex.

Looking forward to Thursday, Norway are tough opponents.

LimitIsUp · 24/06/2019 18:15

I very much doubt she would have the same opinion if it had been USA v Cameroon

MockerstheFeManist · 24/06/2019 18:17

And not all the Cameroon players had it tough. Quite a few of them learned the game at US colleges and the academies of France.

LimitIsUp · 24/06/2019 18:34

Darn it

HiHoToffee · 24/06/2019 18:58

Not a penalty, USA lucky there

HiHoToffee · 24/06/2019 19:01

Hope Solo agrees with me

FermatsTheorem · 24/06/2019 19:02

Couldn't see any contact in that penalty award.

Var is really screwing with this tournament - slowing down the decisions ridiculously, making the whole game too cagey and cautious, really favouring the forwards too much. (That and the ludicrous new handball rules).

Needmoresleep · 24/06/2019 19:32

We were right behind the goal. Not a penalty. The Americans were falling like ninepins through the whole match.

Charley50 · 25/06/2019 06:22

In general - absolutely loving the football played in this tournament - brilliant skills, less 'acting,' fast game. The VAR is shit though, inaccurate, still open to interpretation (as we've seen), and slows the game right down. Why was it trialled on Women's games?

Personally looked to me that England were clearly offside for their 2nd goal against Cameroon, and Cameroon were only barely offside. if at all. for that disallowed goal.

I didn't know that the FA banned women from football for so long; that's nuts.

LimitIsUp · 25/06/2019 10:19

Offside on the second goal? White was a yard onside. If you read match reports from varying news sources (home and abroad) there is 100% consensus on this

Agreed Cameroon was barely offside for their disallowed goal (although still offside, marginal or not) - but given that they were extremely fortunate not to be playing with 10 by that stage - meh

I think the strengths of VAR outweigh the disadvantages, however there have been deficiencies in the standard of refereeing

Looking forward to Thursday's game and Friday's USA v France. USA no longer look unassailable after Spain gave them a run for their money yesterday

MockerstheFeManist · 25/06/2019 10:26

Personally looked to me that England were clearly offside for their 2nd goal against Cameroon

Serously, are you blind? Or do we need to explain the rule to you?

Charley50 · 25/06/2019 14:49

I thought attackers couldn't be in front of two defenders, which was the case for the England goal? Tbh I am a bit shaky on the offside rule, that's what I thought it meant, sorry. blush

HiHoToffee · 25/06/2019 14:58

There was an England player offside but she was not interferring with the game, I don't think she even moved when the ball was played. The England player involved (Ellen White) received the ball from an onside position.
It is tricky, especially when in other matches 2 own goals stood whilst the attacker was offside but deemed not to interfere with the game

MockerstheFeManist · 25/06/2019 16:07

No England player was offside at any time.

Toni Duggan was in an offside position.

It is not an offence to be in an offside position.

Law 11 - Offside

HiHoToffee · 25/06/2019 17:54

That was what I was trying to say in an user friendly kind of way, but yes that. Smile

Italy v China has been ok so far.

Charley50 · 25/06/2019 17:56

It's ok I can handle it. I really thought I understood the offside rule and I clearly don't.

HiHoToffee · 25/06/2019 18:34

Neither did the Cameroon players Wink

Charley50 · 25/06/2019 19:30

I am a Cameroon player! 😂

LineRunner · 25/06/2019 21:07

Just checking in whilst catching up to say that Sian Massey-Ellis should be a ref in this World Cup. Not 'just' an assistant ref.

HiHoToffee · 25/06/2019 22:03

Yes! Netherlands did it, my nerves are shot but very happy ⚽️
I was very impressed with Japan in this game.

And Andre Gomes signed (lowers tone of thread)
