Can we start an anti "nail" campaign?

As a GP who frequently washes her hands, allotment owner and instrument player I really hate the trend for women to have immaculate nails that cost a fortune, scratch people and mean women can't do anything useful. Where t f did this horrible trend come from and how do we give women back the use of their wonderful hands?

I don't usually swear a lot.

You can swear if you want to.

Your body, your choice. lol

Catapultaway · 02/06/2019 19:58

www.allinlondon.co.uk/directory/1832/165581.php

Why is it clearly signed for ladies and gents if it's just ladies that do it?

LimeKiwi · 02/06/2019 20:02

You can swear if you want to.

Your body, your choice. lol

Damn fucking true lol

placemats · 02/06/2019 20:03

I don't like the colour - my body, my choice - obviously
I say things as I see them - my body, my choice - obviously

LimeKiwi · 02/06/2019 20:04

That "general you" is doing a lot of work for you there Lime Kiwi

I'm saying general you because I'm not aiming it at one particular poster, just a particular viewpoint that's shown on the thread I'm not "down" with lol.

zenasfuck · 02/06/2019 20:05

@babdoc
How wonderful to know that you are so judgemental. You must have made an excellent doctor 🤔🤔

placemats · 02/06/2019 20:05

Rejecting gender stereotypes, my body, my choice - obviously

Erythronium · 02/06/2019 20:05

They need all the customers they can get?

Have you ever seen a man who wasn't in drag or trans with nails like the ones that have been posted on this thread?

placemats · 02/06/2019 20:06

Speaking up and defending oneself, my body, my choice - obviously

Erythronium · 02/06/2019 20:07

I'm sure we'll find all the exceptions now like David Bowie or Brad Pitt, who seemed to have dark grey or navy nail varnish.

placemats · 02/06/2019 20:09

I bet they didn't spend £40 quid on it though.

zenasfuck · 02/06/2019 20:09

Are we people or are we decorative
Well I manage to be a person, a woman and do so with a full face of make up and painted nails, they aren't mutually exclusive

Being a feminist isn't about rejecting anything feminine, it is possible to be 'girly' and still be a feminist

DecomposingComposers · 02/06/2019 20:09

Erythronium

But men don't tend to paint their nails.

That doesn't mean that men aren't into complicated grooming routines - they are just on other body parts.

My son and his friends spend ages on their grooming - beards, cleanser, moisturiser, hair, shaving body hair, fake tan, barbers every 2 weeks, gym to get the right "look" They are also very into clothes too.

It really isn't just women who have beauty regimes anymore.

Holdthedamndoor · 02/06/2019 20:10

Erythronium no one is denying there has never been social pressure to have your nails done.

We are saying women, today, do it through choice. It doesnt impact what women can do, their careers, their hobbies, their lives in a negative way.....unless they come across one of the female tits on here that judge women for it.

I have never known a man judge a woman for having her nail done or not having them done. I have seen on here a lot of women judging women for having them done.

What does that tell you?

Why do you want to totally irrdiacte anything perceived as feminine? An woman can be feminine or not. She is still a woman and should still be treated as an equal. Nails are a good example of how it works. Women are not expected to have their nails done. But can choose to if they wish.

Neither choice is unlikely to hold back you career (if you want to be hcp, you wont have the nails done), your hobbies, your dating.

Let them get on with it.

placemats · 02/06/2019 20:10

I'm not off now to watch Antiques Roadshow - obviously

My body, my choice.

Erythronium · 02/06/2019 20:12

"But men don't tend to paint their nails."

Yes indeed. Why is that? They have nails too. Why don't they decorate them the way women do? Nail varnish is available in every supermarket or chemists, anybody can buy it. The nail salon is open to men and women. Like little girls, little boys often enjoy having their nails painted. Why does it stop when they grow up?

Holdthedamndoor · 02/06/2019 20:14

Have you considered it's actually more about societies expectations of what makes a 'real man'?

Rather than the expectations of women.

placemats · 02/06/2019 20:14

My son loved having his nails painted. Just like his dad.

LimeKiwi · 02/06/2019 20:15

Rejecting gender stereotypes, my body, my choice - obviously

My initial reaction to that was go bollocks so I'm still in sweary mode obviously lol.
Reject them, fine! You do you. If you want to reject femininity, do it. Just like if a male wants to reject masculinity, should be able to as well.
If a woman WANTS and LIKES feminine aspects though, that shouldn''t be a bad thing or looked down on or say that they're brainwashed.
Power to your elbow or whatever if you know what you like and don't give a fuck what anyone else thinks, that's what I always say.

Erythronium · 02/06/2019 20:17

"Erythronium no one is denying there has never been social pressure to have your nails done.

We are saying women, today, do it through choice."

So there were social pressures and now there aren't? When did those pressures stop? Can you date it? Now women do it through choice and men don't, also through choice. Nothing to see here, move along with your feminist analysis (aka just noticing differences between the sexes and how each are treated).

placemats · 02/06/2019 20:19

don't give a fuck what anyone else thinks, that's what I always say.

I do actually give a care to what others think though.

If someone said to me that they were thinking of painting their body and walking out naked, I'd care about that and get some help.

Erythronium · 02/06/2019 20:19

Working to understand, resist and destroy patriarchal institutions like the beauty industry, my choice - obviously.

placemats · 02/06/2019 20:19

Of course, it's their body and their choice.

LassOfFyvie · 02/06/2019 20:20

Why do you want to totally irrdiacte anything perceived as feminine?

Yes- that is a good question? The argument from Erythronium is that if men don't do it, it's valueless and women should not do it.

Oh and as for not answering all your questions Erythronium I see you ignored my point that perfume, face cleanser, moisturiser, hand cream and body lotion were on the list of oppressive beauty regimes on the other thread. What a miserable life it would be to exclude them. As men use them I have to assume they were included simply because of general disapproval of such fripperies.

DecomposingComposers · 02/06/2019 20:20

Yes indeed. Why is that? They have nails too.

Well I don't rightly know. Goths paint their nails.

Maybe men are more constrained by the patriarchy? Or maybe they think women would judge them (based on what's been said on here they would be correct) and so conform rather than do what they would really like to do?
