Rory Stewart is a candidate for the new leader of the Conservative party. More importantly, he wants to be our next Prime Minister, and that means that we all have an interest in holding his feet to the fire, whatever our political persuasion.

He's got a website "Ask Rory" where you can put your questions to him. He also invites you to meet him, if you want to, and will tell you when he is nearby.

www.roryforleader.co.uk/ask_rory

At the moment there is a big gap in the questions that are being asked of him. There is nothing about the Great Experiment being carried out on children wanting to present as the opposite sex. Nothing about trans people in prisons. (he was the prisons minister) Nothing about the state's dismantling of basic safeguarding. Nothing about self i/d into womanhood and the threat to women's services, sports and spaces

His campaign is gathering momentum because it is happening on social media while he is travelling the country. He's finding that voters are not all focussed on Brexit but adult social care, crime, the cost of childcare and so on. He is setting the pace and a stark contrast to the Contenders in their chauffeur-driven cars, PAs and security who talk AT the public but not with them.

Worth a shot, I reckon.

Ok, what’s the best question to ask? If lots of people ask the same (or similar) question, is that more likely to get his attention than lots of slightly different ones?

AncientLights · 31/05/2019 13:11

Done. I made my GC views clear. Will let you know of any reply.

HollowTalk · 31/05/2019 13:16

Is there any way to see the questions?

theOtherPamAyres · 31/05/2019 13:26

Is there any way to see the questions?

Throughout the day he posts short videos of himself looking at his phone and saying what questions are coming in. The ones on crime and adult social care* he will answer this evening, he says.

*I was impressed by a member of the public who button-holed him in Somerset about adult social care. Really knew his stuff. Pointed out that Somerset Council spent released £2 million pounds to fill potholes (more than enough) and £2 million pounds for social care (not enough).

I have never voted Conservative and know I never will, but I have to say I was very impressed by him on QT last night.

TheAngryLlama · 31/05/2019 13:40

I also like him and I hope he comes good on this issue.
Otherwise I’ll not know which of the buggers to vote for

CloudRusting · 31/05/2019 13:48

Question asked

onalongsabbatical · 31/05/2019 13:52

I'm tempted to ask - Rory, Rory, why are you a Tory? Grin
But I'll think of something more productive. Thanks for this.

theOtherPamAyres · 31/05/2019 14:15

I'm going to ask him about 'gender' crime recording, where male offenders are classed as women.

NellieEllie · 31/05/2019 14:47

Done one about materials in schools re trans, and use of puberty blockers.

theOtherPamAyres · 31/05/2019 15:36

Mine turned into an essay about the Criminal Justice system's war on women - police, courts, prisons, crime recording and analysis. (Blush)

It went from arrests by the police to release of newly transed sex offenders.

A shorter, succinct question would be better, probably Grin

He is definitely the best candidate for Tory leader - seems intelligent and reasonable. Also I like the fact that (so far) he hasn't paraded his wife around in the obligatory kitchen photo-shoot. Apparently he delivered one of his children (not sure how much truth there is in that story though).

I really hope his approach of trekking round the country talking to voters works for him. It makes the other hopefuls look very lazy and uninterested.

Now, we just need to know if he is gender-critical, and make him aware of the very big issues that we FWR lot are concerned with.

Maybe MNHQ could ask him to do a MN chat? He needs to know how influential Mumsnet is, and treat us with more respect than previous politicians. If he came on here and engaged (and if we like what he has to say), and then became leader, he could be very popular with 50% of the population.

Perhaps someone who is on Twitter could tweet him and direct him to this thread?

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 31/05/2019 16:19

I keep reading these threads as Rod Stewart 🙄

justju · 31/05/2019 16:22

I reckon he'll just stick with a very safe reply though won't he? He won't want the pile-on.

Italiangreyhound · 31/05/2019 16:25

"Maybe MNHQ could ask him to do a MN chat?" That is a good idea. How do we ask @mumsnethq?

I want to know how he is going to right the wrongs of the last government and take people out of poverty.

Italiangreyhound · 31/05/2019 16:25

Correction- current government!

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 31/05/2019 16:26

From what I’ve seen of him on tv he isn’t they type to spout bland fluff to keep everyone happy or run away from saying what the things.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 31/05/2019 16:27

‘What he thinks’

Thesuzle · 31/05/2019 16:32

He wont make the short list presented to conservative members as he’s admitted smoking heroin (was it) and Trump is now considering banning him from entering the USA
Wont be much use as a PM then will he

endofthelinefinally · 31/05/2019 16:35

I have seen him on QT a couple of times and then looked up his Wiki page.
I have never voted conservative in my life, but I am thinking that he seems to be a person of integrity.
I am so disappointed in everybody else, I don't have anybody to vote for.
Jo Swinson talks the talk on several issues, but has no grasp of biology protecting women's rights or safeguarding children. Sad
Perhaps MN could ask them both to do a web chat?

BadgertheBodger · 31/05/2019 16:43

He used to be my MP before I moved and he is a very decent sort who was a great constituency MP with a good grasp of local issues. It would be great if he would do a web chat but I just can’t see him giving honest answers if he genuinely wants to be PM - how could you risk it? Even if he is GC (which I suspect he is, being a sensible sort) he’s not going to admit it because every TRA in the world would be baying for his blood. I suspect they’d have it as well, lots of friends in high places.

LatinforTelly · 31/05/2019 17:01

Done. I may have got a bit ranty.

TimeLady · 31/05/2019 17:07

He won't get the Conservative members' votes because he says he plans to renegotiate the Withdrawal Agreement, despite Brussels making it abundantly clear there will be no renegotiation, especially with a new rookie PM. He's a Remainer at heart, and it's showing.

It doesn't matter how well he engages with non-Conservative voters around the country. Those are not the people he has to convince.

happydappy2 · 31/05/2019 17:54

Done-not holding my breath for an answer though.

birdsdestiny · 31/05/2019 17:58

He is running a hell of a campaign though. And the Tories hardly ever choose the favourite, it's often an outsider who wins it.
