I never even knew about Hedy Lamar. Great new word.

It wasn’t until she was very old that they admitted she came up with it. they didn’t tell her she could claim for royalties for the patent until it was too late.

Sarah Guppy gave her patented designs to Brunel. Something to do with foundations, so a suspension bridge could be built.

Have just read about Sarah Guppy. Thank you Finn. So angry that I have never heard of her until now. DH is an engineer so bridges are a thing in this house (?!) but I bet he has no idea about her.

She seems to have given so much of her mental labour and ideas for free (prob due to not being a woman's place or 'nice' or some shite) and it makes me wonder what else she gave away that men took credit for. According to wikipedia, she reportedly said "it is unpleasant to speak of oneself—it may seem boastful particularly in a woman."

Fear of unpleasantness never stopped the men from talking themselves up did it. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

BTW for anyone interested in Hedy Lemarr (and she is a truly fascinating woman), there is a fabulous documentary called "bombshell".

Not sure what I am contested. Bombshell is a great movie.

Hedy Lemarr was a genius and I think she’s finally getting the recognition she deserves. There was a recent episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow about her, for instance.

Hate the term mentrification though. Portmanteau neologisms make me wince at the best of times, and a five syllable one is just taking the piss.
