Martina Navratilova to front BBC1 transgender athletes doc

I knew she was making a documentary but I didn't know it was for the BBC. Bit wary now of what she'll be allowed to say.

The tennis star and gay rights campaigner is to front Brook Lapping’s 60-minute doc Trans Athletes: A Fair Playing Field?, which will air next month.

In February, Navratilova was roundly criticised by trans and equality activists for stating that allowing transgender women to compete in women’s sporting tournaments was “insane and cheating”. She subsequently said she would do more research on the matter.

For the doc, Navratilova will speak with the athletes, scientists and sporting officials at the forefront of the debate, including former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies, who said in March that transgender athletes could “ruin women’s sport”.

She will also meet trans medical physicist and former runner Joanna Harper, who will explain how her run times dropped by more than 10% following her transition.

IOC allows trans athletes to have testosterone levels FIVE TIMES HIGHER than the average woman’s.

How interesting that the scientist that has "evidence" transwomen don't have advantages is a transwoman.

Oooh and here's another bloke with sad stories and a huge personal agenda.

A drop from 30 testosterone to 10 yes, has of course it has an impact on personal performance. It doesn't change the advantages of male puberty or the fact that women average 2 not 10. Women are not men with low testosterone, they're a whole different biological being.

I wonder if female athletes were to worried about backlash to appear.

Really excellent point there about elite sport. The performance gap at the top is so narrow that even the smallest advantage conferred by legacy physiology (excellent phrase) will make the difference.

It's one thing to look at what happens after transition, but a lot of people want purely self-identification - that sociologist was only concerned with that and with women trying harder.
