I think maybe just because in Thailand dogs in general - and disabled dogs - don’t have a life like they tend to have in U.K. etc. Indeed they often are sold and traded as part of the Asian meat trade, others live a pretty rough life on the streets.
I think the point was the owner kept his disabled dog (alive) and that it went on to do something purposeful is part of the story, as this is a dog that most would have deemed “of no use” and killed or sold off to a worse outcome (ie for meat).
