Only heard about this today. Seems like another Parkfields type situation. Intrigued that the LGBT activists who have been pelted with eggs by protesters angry at the school teaching "gay rights" were apparently "12 women and a man".

Anyone know any more about this? Do we know if the activists were representative mainly of the L or the T?

This is what you're talking about OP:

People should not be protesting outside schools for any reason - the targeting of schools and teachers should stop - no matter what the issues with the 'no outsiders' programme. There's a thread about it somewhere on here.

Absolutely agree- take your protest up with your MP or the department for Education. Someone who can do something about whatever you object to. Don’t picket schools.

Redshoeblueshoe · 21/05/2019 08:34

But there was an MP there, she was fairly vocal from what was on the news yesterday

Absolutely agree. I don't want pupils, parents or staff having to walk through crowds of either protesters or activists. My question was specifically about the make up of the group of activists. My understanding is that lesbians have been significantly under-represented at, eg, Pride events, and have been ejected from events focused on inclusivity. So I was surprised to see the report that 12 of the 13 activists (ie in support of the teaching of 'gay rights') were women.

I wondered if perhaps some were TW? From the perspective of how intimidated I might feel as a pupil, parent or teacher, this would IMO make a difference.

Local MP (Jess Philips) is calling for an exclusion zone for protest away from the school.
However this MP should not have engaged with the protesters when she was at the site. You can’t argue for a protest exclusion zone and then get into a confrontation outside the gates yourself.

maddening · 21/05/2019 09:17

I would be more intimidated by men that throw things at women.

Thingybob · 21/05/2019 09:35

The group staging the counter protest were SEEDS (Supporting the Education of Equality and Diversity in Schools) The same group previously protested at Park fields and photos taken then suggests the membership includes both types of women.

whymewhynow · 21/05/2019 09:38

I disagree, Chatty. The protesters (it seemed from the video clip that I watched) were demanding that Jess Phillips come and meet them as part of some form of arbitration. She turned up - I think she was cornered on her way out of the school as she mentioned that she had been meeting staff within it - and told them, rather brilliantly, imo, that she did not support their point of view and therefore would not be joining in their protest. This unusually direct piece of plain-speaking left the activist at a bit of a loss and he then started (aggressively) accusing her of being aggressive. Jess Phillips handled the whole thing very well.

ChattyLion · 21/05/2019 09:43

I should have added ‘I don’t know what reason she went to the school though’ to my post and I haven’t seen the video so fair enough. It’s reasonable as the local MP to make your point if challenged when leaving a meeting with the school. Clearly not OK to counter protest and then ask for an exclusion zone.

I feel sorry for the kids having to walk past these thugs on their way to school in the morning.
