discussing the issue of fairness in sport

she very cleverly clarifies the Caster Semenya 46xy issue and also discusses Dr Rachel Mckinnon ( Dr philosophy)

www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/w3csy97q

She stands her ground and expresses her points well

It was worthy of study.

FannyCann · 20/05/2019 23:15

I don’t know much about sport but this might be the first time a cyclist has scored an own goal.

GrinGrinGrin

Maybe McKinnon is in the wrong sport. Wink

Sparkyduchess · 20/05/2019 23:23

Sharron was brilliant, just outstanding.

Her explanation of the minute differences between elite sportswomen, and the enormous differences between elite men and women was fantastic, just unarguable.

tothefareast80 · 21/05/2019 00:58

Just listening to this now. Wow, Sharron was so impressive. Incredibly well prepared, facts at her fingers tips, and really highlighted the essential facts that have been so lacking in this debate. I love that she called out the BBC on its lack of clarity in relation to Semenya's condition.

Nightowlreturns · 21/05/2019 01:09

Just caught this on BBC news. i agree she was very good, composed and knowledgable.

The only trouble is there was a lot of jargon, meaning that anyone not immersed in this may miss the important points. How many people know what 46XY means off the top of their heads? Or DSD? Maybe loads, I didn’t before becoming interested in this but maybe I was particularly ignorant!

Not taking anything away from Sharron, she is excellent. All the stats on the tip of her tongue, she really sounds expert. I think Sackur is always like that, I didn’t think he was especially harsh on her. It’s a tough interview, that’s the point of Hard Talk. He gave her room to explain her points, it was good.

bellabelly · 21/05/2019 01:14

She's an absolute legend! Well done SD.

woman19 · 21/05/2019 07:04

I've seen SS do some good interviews. He was odd in this. Is there some sort of Stepford Husbands training that he and the likes of James O Brien go on which teaches them to patronise with ignorance? Didn't work in this case.

SD was absolutely brilliant. I learnt so much.
"Is the BBC going to explain what 46XY is?"
Thank you for posting OP. Smile

Needmoresleep · 21/05/2019 09:48

I think Sharon talking about how she had previously been constrained by her employer, the BBC, from questioning the Irish swimmer, and SS' refusal to answer the 46XY question linked. He did not, because he could not, as his whole BBC approved position would then have unravelled.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/05/2019 10:34

Just listened - he really didn't want to discuss CS sex did he...

Doobigetta · 21/05/2019 11:26

Just listened. Sharron was incredible. Loved how SS was desperate to talk about Caster, until they talked about Caster and Sharron made mincemeat of him, and then he didn’t want to talk about Caster any more.

Antibles · 21/05/2019 14:12

Sharron was excellent!! Star Huge respect for her for standing up for women's sports like this.

The programme itself is listed as asking hardhitting questions and I would expect it to be couched confrontationally I so don't really have an issue with that. Sharron nailed it anyway.

What is great is that a piece focusing entirely on this precise question was commissioned and aired! A year ago we honestly wouldn't have been hearing this. I thank the Hardtalk team too.

TinselAngel · 21/05/2019 20:17

Can Sharron be our Queen please?

AnyFucker · 21/05/2019 20:37

She was great

TheBullshitGoesOn · 21/05/2019 22:35

Just watched it. Sharron was great.

boatyardblues · 22/05/2019 07:09

Very good interview. Well done Sharron! You were so well prepared.

sue51 · 22/05/2019 10:00

Outstanding interview. Her talents are massively underused. Give her her own talk show, she is awesome.

MockerstheFeManist · 22/05/2019 10:26

Case Study.

The whole point of Hardtalk is the interviewee does not get to set any conditions for the interview. So Sharron said, so that means I can answer how I like and overturn all these gagging orders you've been putting on me for over twenty years....

Serious questions about continuing BBC cowardice, from the failure to call out Michelle Smith De Brunye (wife of convicted drug-cheat, sister-in-law of convicted drug cheat, suspicious?) to the persisent misreporting of Semenya and her 'abnormally high levels of testosterone (....becuase she has testes and no ovaries.)

Also like the heckle about how McFibber would lose to a seventy year old man.

bottomflannel · 22/05/2019 12:23

Just watching this now. Am so impressed. Brava Sharron Flowers

ThinkWittyThoughts · 22/05/2019 17:13

I watched this morning on my commute. I was grinning from ear to ear, must have looked like a loon Blush

I am more than a little but in love with Sharron Davies. She's ace Star

boatyardblues · 22/05/2019 17:24

I think one of the positive by-products of this whole debate is the number of women casting off their female socialisation and telling it like it is. Its a fairly short hop from peaking to giving no fucks.

Degustibusnonestdisputandem1 · 22/05/2019 19:14

Just finished watching, she was brilliant!!

BBCBias001 · 22/05/2019 22:01

I complained to the BBC about the Inside Science program ignoring the XY issue.

I have had a response which boils down to 'we don't think there is an issue'.

I have therefore told them I am not happy with their response. Will update if I get any further.

IcedPurple · 22/05/2019 22:57

I've watched several episodes of 'Hardtalk' and Sackur is usually very well-informed and a very good interviewer - the provocative questioning wasn't unique to this interview, it's the whole point of the format.

But I don't think I've ever seen him so defeated by cold hard facts as he was here. Sharron was amazing. Talented, beautiful, intelligent, articulate.... is there anything this woman can't do?

LikeothersIamjustme · 23/05/2019 09:17

Watched last night - brilliant.

SonicVersusGynaephobia · 26/05/2019 06:29

She was fantastic. She must have been so well prepared because she knew exactly how to answer the "difficult* (easy) questions without giving answers that could be used as quotes to back up claims of bigotry, eg the 46XY issue and the BBC " restrictions", & about McCyclepath.
