The Week Junior - Caster Semenya

My children have this weekly newspaper. I like it as it discusses major issues and is age appropriate. Since we've been having it I've been impressed by its reporting. However, this article has just wound me up. I would have preferred for them not to report on it than put this in. I'm going to write to the editor. Does anyone else think this is bad reporting?

It's a little difficult to see what it's saying.

That was my feeling, that it was a complete non article. I was confused by it so how children would react would be interesting.

I think it could be good for youngsters to have to think about fairness and how different needs and situations are balanced.

I also subscribe to this magazine;. The article looks fine to me, and in line with their general style of reporting - what exactly is your concern?

The only complaint I would have is that their definition of discrimination includes the word "unfair", whereas it should just say that discrimination is when people are treated differently based on individual characteristics or group membership; whether this particular discrimination is unfair or not was the whole point of the case.

I like the way The Week tends to present stories in a fairly neutral way which provides a backdrop for further discussion with DC.
DS1 (10) and I had a pretty in depth conversation about Caster Semenya which led to the wider issues of trans women competing in female sport and then trans women in women only spaces. Think his mind was a bit blown by it all, has certainly given him plenty to think about 😁

My daughter gets the week. Will have a read. And use it as a discussion/education point. Thanks for letting me know the story is there.
