Female-only taxi service plans blocked by Glasgow City Council for being 'sexist'

"A proposal by Margo Welsh to start Rosy and Pink Cars, offering female drivers to female passengers and their children, was dismissed yesterday by licensing chiefs at Glasgow City Council .

Welsh was prompted to launch the service after seeing "the amount of sex attacks in this day and age," but councillors branded the plan "sexist"."

A I wrong in thinking they are ignoring equality law and that this should be considered a permitted exemption?

Regular=‘non-leery types

I can see that a train is a different situation. I'm just sad that this is the solution. Women having to change what they do, not men.
I still concerned about the responsibility of decision/ choice though. That would become a question for a court- "why did you not chose a female driver".
But- I totally support women's right to organise and use single sex facilities. And the law protects this, so I think that Glasgow are on dodgy ground.

snowbear66 · 11/05/2019 11:25

It's such a good idea.
Lone female travelling from nightclubs would be so much safer.
I bet there was scant consideration given to the benefits (of not being raped/murdered) to women.
As if male taxi drivers would miss out on a tiny bespoke service offered to women.

LassOfFyvie · 11/05/2019 11:38

Can you ask for a female driver when ordering a taxi?

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 11/05/2019 11:48

Ugh. Surely this would benefit blokes anyway as the usual taxi services would have more free cabs so less waiting time. The only men this will inconvenience are the fucking pervs, and god forbid we make things a fraction harder fo them eh.

LassOfFyvie · 11/05/2019 11:48

Obviously one can ask but do taxi companies accommodate this?

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 11/05/2019 11:49

Would allow female drivers to be a bit safer too. The stories I am told from the female ones here are horrendous..the male oines tend to have a few stories too mind but its not quite to the same extent, women are targetted, which should be no shock. If I was a taxi driver, I would hate doing runs alone with a drunk bloke. I know people will say its a hazard o the job, but..of course it shouldn't be.

Why would that be the case? Many councils limit the number of licences. What you are saying would only be the case if they added extra women only drivers and there were enough female only passengers wanting to use them.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 11/05/2019 12:27

OK I didn't know that. In that case, our council really needs to lighten up with the restrictions, as it seems near impossible to get taxis here unless booked days in advance!

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 11/05/2019 12:28

Or jumping in a black cab, which I refuse to do because..well..pervs. Too many bad experiences. I will only use one if out with my husband.

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 11/05/2019 13:19

You can ask. I always do. However, even when I book several days in advance and have been promised a woman driver, when the cab arrives it is almost always a bloke behind the wheel.

The irony of all the shit that women have to put up with, when they are assaulted or worse. “Why did you walk that way/by yourself/drunk/in the dark, etc?” Women are even being told on fucking police posters what THEY should do t9 prevent themselves from being raped, but when some women want to creat a women only service, they’re told they don’t need it. Misogynistic, women hating assholes.

S1naidSucks · 11/05/2019 13:46

Excuse the angry spelling mistakes.

S1naidSucks · 11/05/2019 13:47

What do you do when that happens? If you get the taxi, then they’re going to keep doing it.

AgentCooper · 11/05/2019 13:49

I think it’s a brilliant idea. I live in Glasgow. My sister had a horrible experience with a taxi driver once and ended up walking the rest of her way home.

stealthsquirrelnutkin · 11/05/2019 14:59

I book taxis to get to important appointments. If I don't get in the cab I miss the appointment. So I get in the cab and then use a different firm the next time.

I've now used all the available firms in this area and they have all proved to be unreliable and not the slightest bit bothered. Obviously, like the misogynists on Glasgow Council, they don't believe there is any genuine reason why a woman would require a woman driver.

Perhaps they too dismiss me as a man hating sexist, and send out male drivers on purpose in an attempt to re-educate me? Perhaps they have a good guffaw at the thought of my saggy titted old self being so deluded as to think any of them would be tempted to rape me? Or perhaps they don't have many women drivers because it's not a safe job for women, and the ones they do have tend to only do the school runs?

All I do know is that if there was a firm that only hired women drivers they would get my custom. As would any female plumber, electrician, carpenter, gardener, decorator and odd job woman. I wish there was a national register of female centred businesses, but of course any woman on such a register would risk being targeted by angry perverts, who think the same way as Glasgow Council and are mortally offended by women trying to prioritise other women.

Worth remembering that in one year there were 32 reports of rapes/sexual assaults by Uber drivers in London:
