I don't often post; the battles I fight are against legal and medical authorities employing witchcraft allegations against men and women, in the 21st century. If you think TRA's and their supporters can be bizarre, I can trump you near enough every time.

Now though, I'm seeing something I've never seen before.

Lighthouse Radical Bookshop in Edinburgh has taken the positively 'radical' step of opposing free speech and assembly. It's the equivalent of a bookshop determining that the firemen in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451 were doing a good job.

Although I imagine a cleric-sponsored bookshop in a fundamentalist religious nation might not be inclined towards free speech, or a bookshop sponsored by the National Socialist Party in 1930s Germany might not be too favourable towards the concept of free speech and assembly, the decision by the owners of Lighthouse Radical Bookshop defies comprehension.

Not unsurprisingly they are being panned for their interpretation of what a bookshop is. The owner, Mairi Oliver might think she's being really 'hip' in displaying her extreme wokeness, but the concept of a bookshop opposed to free speech and assembly is just downright creepy.

I generally stay from social media.

Although there's a general perception that the SRA (Satanic Ritual Abuse) Myth days finished in-or-around 1992, there's still plenty of advocates for it found, particularly in the UK.

I don't write about it here as invariably the subject of Beatrix 'Witchfinder General' Campbell comes-up, whilst colleagues of mine in the US will bring up some issues with Gloria Steinhem and disgraced psychiatrist Bennett Braun which tend to leave folk a bit stunned.

You'd think people who run a bookshop would be able to use words accurately e.g
'Bigot: a person who is intolerant towards those holding different opinions.'

Then again, maybe they've burned their dictionaries...

OldCrone · 09/05/2019 14:08

Dictionaries are transphobic.

Woman: adult human female

R0wantrees · 09/05/2019 14:11

There was 'women's' bookshop in London which opened last year in a blaze of TRA social media craziness.

Second Shelf?

They is FROTHING 😝😝😂😂

Justhadathought · 09/05/2019 16:07

The notion that a 'radical' bookshop would outlaw radical feminist thinking, including many classic feminist texts is quite frankly weird.
What is radical about book burning and censure?

R0wantrees · 09/05/2019 16:18

Lighthouse Bookshop statement (previously this year)
TO PLATFORM OR NOT TO PLATFORM: WHERE WE STAND.

(extract)
"In our view, trans-exclusive rights campaigns, whether they call themselves feminist or use the term “gender-critical”, are reactionary rather than radical, and knowingly cause harm to women. As such, people and organisations who share such views with the intention of spreading misinformation that harms trans and non-binary people have absolutely no place on the shelves of our bookshop or speaking at any of our events.

These statements are not intended to be intimidating, but rather act as a summary of our position in as direct and dispassionate a way as possible. We feel this directness is necessary because groups seeking to demonise or marginalise trans and non-binary people under the banner of feminism have been disruptive at various recent radical and anarchist gatherings in the UK.

At Lighthouse, we believe that we rise together, or not at all. We want to forward the cause of the most persecuted, exploited and overlooked. If we raise the lowest bar, we elevate everyone - but if we pull the ladder up behind us we are no better than those who persecuted us.

Many of us have the privilege of not needing to check whether we are safe and included in radical and feminist spaces. This policy is intended as a statement of reassurance to those who unfortunately do." (continues)

I think they may also have been involved in some defamatory comments about WPUK re a bookfair last year?

breakfastpizza · 09/05/2019 16:59

If you can, please remember to report any tweets that are abusive towards women. It's a couple of click-throughs on Twitter. I usually go for the 'targeted harassment' option.

KatvonHostileExtremist · 09/05/2019 17:03

I noted with interest this character GOING THROUGH THE LIKES on the tweet, so she could call people out for wrong think. Cos that's not at all mad. She can stick me in the gulag for that ableism too. Grin

knowingly cause harm to women

I suppose we can't accuse TRAs of that since they don't appear to know what a woman actually is.Hmm

donquixotedelamancha · 09/05/2019 18:25

Apparently the event is part of the "global rise of fascism"

They keep using that word. I do not think it means what they think it means.
