Converse shoes promoting Desmond is Amazing

Converse shoes (in America) have brought out a range of shoes to celebrate 50 years of Pride:

www.converse.com/c/pride

So far, so good.

Except that one of their models is Desmond, who is labelled on the Converse website as an 11-year old "Drag Kid"...

Converse have been called out by "An Open Secret" on Twitter are are getting a surprising amount of support:

It absolutely baffles me that a big company like Converse would choose to be associated with this. I will never buy from them now, which is a shame, as their "Pride" collection is quite cool otherwise!

Bollocks. Is nothing bloody sacred anymore?? These are my standard issue shoe 99 percent of the time. I need new ones too. They better climb down seriously on this before payday.

Quietlife333 · 08/05/2019 23:26

Wtf is wrong with these people. I got my dd some for this summer- they will be going in the bin also.

Mrsjayy · 08/05/2019 23:29

Ah no wtf are they playing at he doesn't need to be exploited to advertise bloody trainers poor kid!

LassOfFyvie · 08/05/2019 23:30

As someone said on the Twitter thread Desmond looks ill , not amazing.

I would boycott them but I'm unlikely to ever be looking for a pair of overpriced gym shoes.

Mrsjayy · 08/05/2019 23:32

He has always looked ill but he is autistic so maybe his diet is limited.

GeordieGenes · 08/05/2019 23:34

The comments are good though. I can't see any supporting Converse's decision. Most of them are saying how disgusted they are by the promotion of this poor kid.

OP posts:
Mrsjayy · 08/05/2019 23:40

I think the comments are very positive

JellySlice · 08/05/2019 23:41

Urgh. This is wrong on so many levels.

Also very weird. Putting a flag on the soles of shoes and treading it into the dirt is offensive to what the flag represents!

GeordieGenes · 08/05/2019 23:51

The ratio on Converse's tweet...

Exploitation of a child.

AlwaysComingHome · 09/05/2019 00:12

At least Nike only financially exploited children; they didn’t pimp them out.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 09/05/2019 08:31

Converse is owned by Nike.... for about 15 years.

DpWm · 09/05/2019 09:32

I think his mum shows up on that thread agressively defending "her son's right to be his true self" or something.
Everyone can see it for what it is. Putting your son in the gaze (and company) of paedophiles because you gain $$$ for it. She's pimping him out.
Converse are also pimping him out. It's just wtf all over.

Motheroffeminists · 09/05/2019 11:14

Ffs. Once my 3 have grown out of their converse (this summer probably) they won't be bought any more.

StopThePlanet · 09/05/2019 20:15

Damnit I love my Chucks - I guess DH will be pleased (he says they make feet look like skis) - they're pretty beat up (was ready for new pair) so in the trash they go. Can't part with my Nike cross-trainers yet - too expensive and barely worn-in. I won't be buying Nike or Converse in the future though. Too bad for them as I go through exercise and fun sneakers like water.

Poor Desmond 😪

AlwaysComingHome · 09/05/2019 20:18

The downside of being an atheist is I don’t believe there’s a Hell for Desmond’s parents to burn in.

Erythronium · 09/05/2019 21:47

Desmond isn't L, B, G or T so are they saying he's Q? That's dodgy as fuck.

Erythronium · 09/05/2019 21:55

Someone posted this little video clip of Desmond on the Twitter thread. So disturbing:

Seconded

OldCrone · 09/05/2019 22:19

That clip really is disturbing, Erythronium. How can anyone look at that and think what is being done to that child is OK?

Genderfreelass · 09/05/2019 23:33

Glad to see the comments are very much against an 11 year old being used/abused and converse are loosing a lot of customers by the look of it!

GirlDownUnder · 10/05/2019 07:02

Desmond isn't L, B, G or T so are they saying he's Q?

According to his parents, he's gay.

And he's known for years he's gay.

He's 11 ffs.

So yes, I agree That's dodgy as fuck.

SarahTancredi · 10/05/2019 07:17

Ffs

More thought goes into what eyeliner someone buys than who people chose to associate with.

Rainbows. That all they see. Jump on the woke wagon and dont even remotely check out behind the scenes.

I bet they wouldnt buy something on Ebay without checking out feedback on the seller...

Motheroffeminists · 10/05/2019 09:16

I have an intense hatred of rainbows on anything other than the sky since all this bollocks started. And rainbows are bloody everywhere 😡

DpWm · 10/05/2019 09:53

Motheroffeminusrs
I agree completely.
I was in Sainsbury's looking at summer head gear for my son, he was asking for a cap.
They'd sold out of boys caps so I went to look in the girls section, sometimes girls get quite nice/neutral items. Nope. They were all daft Lacey things apart from one, Ah! denim! I thought. BUT it had a rainbow across the front I would have maybe once upon a time thought, well what's wrong with a little boy wearing a denim cap with a small rainbow? But I literally recoiled because of the associations in my head about the whole Stonewall/Abusive/TRA stuff.
It's ruined my perspective 😥

Still haven't found him a cap either. It's mad they're either horrid Army style for boys or shit impractical style for girls! Sorry, tangent.
