Thank you Joanna. How I wish I could vote for an MP as brilliant as you.

youllhavehadyourtea · 01/05/2019 18:05

Hope you got my card today Joanna!

FermatsTheorem · 01/05/2019 18:05

Joanna Cherry is my new hero.

NowtSalamander · 01/05/2019 18:20

Very interesting, Ro. Watched the whole thing - hopefully twitter will sort themselves out. Clear moderation bias.

QuestaVecchiaCasa · 01/05/2019 18:21

In other politics news I see that following Gavin Williamson's sacking, Penny Mordant has moved to Defence. Wonder whether the ROGD investigation will be completely forgotten?

Michelleoftheresistance · 01/05/2019 18:25

Thank you for sharing that. A couple of points of Joanna's I don't agree with (women not in public life shouldn't be any more targets than women in public life) - but very well put indeed. Exposes the double standards very clearly, asks to know why sex as a protected characteristic has been replaced by gender and gender identity, and is only getting incoherent wittering from whoever is answering on behalf of Twitter. Although they are absolutely not going to say the word sex. At all. Or admit anything.

Michelleoftheresistance · 01/05/2019 18:27

following Gavin Williamson's sacking, Penny Mordant has moved to Defence.

God help the defence ministry, they've got a chocolate teapot and a half there.

Is dear Pen taking women And Equalities with themselves or is someone else going to be assigned that particular stink bomb?

R0wantrees · 01/05/2019 18:27

It seemed likely that the representative from Twitter was completely unaware of the degree to which Twitter has been weaponised against women trying to discuss the conflict to sex based rights & Safeguarding.

Where does this leave mass 'terf blockers' & the deliberately targetted reporting of important voices such as MRKTAKE2, Posie Parker, Venice Allan, Miranda Yardley, Maria Maclachlan etc ?

I think there are threads on FWR as well as Twitter collecting lists of names.

When it was announced on R4 they didn't even bother to include Women&Eq, just mentioned dear Pen had been Minister for International Development!

I bet it's become like the Northern Ireland brief used to be - the one everyone pleads and begs not to have to do.

StillLostinEdinburgh · 01/05/2019 18:34

She's my MP and I voted for her. So pleased!

My god that was brilliant. Joanna Cherry was superbly analytical.

I love the way that at every point where a video could be maliciously edited, she comments that she condemns abuse of trans people.

It seemed likely that the representative from Twitter was completely unaware of the degree to which Twitter has been weaponised against women

Nah. I think she was completely aware and decided her only recourse in the face of such superb questioning was to play dumb.

Nah. I think she was completely aware and decided her only recourse in the face of such superb questioning was to play dumb.

The full extent isn't realised.

The tweet which has triggered this is very recent. Helen Lewis etc may also only be partially aware.

God help the defence ministry, they've got a chocolate teapot and a half there.

Yeah, I bet they are really pissed off they are losing the smooth efficiency of Gavin Williamson. I'm sure they look with jealousy at the competence of people like Chris Grayling or Karen Bradley.

Let's face it, when Michael Gove is the most effective minister in your cabinet, you've fucked up.

Lumene · 01/05/2019 18:45

Thank goodness someone is asking these questions.

donquixotedelamancha · 01/05/2019 18:49

The full extent isn't realised.

I'm usually very happy to blame stupidity over malice, but the extent of the moderation bias is such that I think it's policy. Perhaps not officially so, but still coming from high enough to affect the whole moderation culture.

I think it will take a lot more than a PR bod (who may well see the problem) nodding sympathetically to change that policy.

TimeLady · 01/05/2019 18:54

My goodness, Joanna Cherry was impressive. The Twitter representative was totally out of her depth.

EweSurname · 01/05/2019 18:56

Joanna’s facing some hostility (on twitter of course) for this

Genderfreelass · 01/05/2019 19:00

Twitter rep did not come across well at all, seemed quite clueless. Well done Joanna though, cool calm and utterly brilliant!

truthisarevolutionaryact · 01/05/2019 19:03

Watching that was awesome. Very effective questioning with the Twitter rep appearing clueless.

R0wantrees · 01/05/2019 19:06

Penny Mordant is keeping Women & Equalities as well as taking on Defence! Hmm

'Did Mumsnet Just Hand Penny Mordaunt Her Arse?'
March 14, 2019 by Eleanor Scott

(extract)
"It takes a certain set of tools to turn a golden opportunity to engage with hundreds of thousands of women on International Women’s Day into an unmitigated PR disaster, and Penny Mordaunt MP has somehow managed to pull it off. I’ve met Penny Mordaunt a few times in Portsmouth over the years while I was on Council-related business, and she has always seemed perfectly likeable and pleasant. But future Prime Minister material? Not unless courting disaster is now seen as prerequisite rather than unfortunate happenstance." (continues)

Wow that was amazing! She was so clear and asking the questions of Twitter many of us want answered. Just shows why we need more female MPs and all women shortlists!

RepealTheGRA · 01/05/2019 19:26

Mordaunt in charge of defence? Fuck me, that’s not good.

At this rate I’m considering a move to Scotland, SNP are starting to be the party most ‘on’ this.
