Rape crisis centre - staff trained to “ask the cis guest to leave”

I know most trans are perfectly nice people just living their lives, who need the same services as everyone.

Re rape crisis centres, I think a way to balance everyone’s needs would be dedicated facilities for transwomen.

Remember, a TW may choose to:

  • have zero hormonal or surgical treatment, hence retain their pre-transition physiology and facial hair
  • dress like a man (see “trans butch lesbian)

In other words, it may be impossible to discern their gender identity visually (the training covers this).

Also, Self-ID would mean that transition requires only a stat dec. We know men will abuse this, anyone who thinks otherwise is living in a privilege bubble.

So you have been raped, Police and CPS do fuck all. Your rapist identifies as a woman and enters the refuge you have sheltered in. Then you are asked to leave when you have the reaction any of us females would. Fucking fuck, I am so angry. WOMEN funded these shelters, WOMEN gave their widow's mite to fund them for their sisters who needed them, WOMEN give their time to run them. Right now I am flippin fumin. What the hell can we do? Is there anything we can do? Something needs to be done!

theOtherPamAyres · 01/05/2019 17:47

The solution is simple - single sex services should not be put in this position. They shouldn't have to decide which one of the two sexes they can work with.

Men should not be referred to them. Men should not self-refer to them - even though a refusal often offends. There are plenty of LGBT helplines that can advise on more appropriate services.

Service providers not be pressurised to accept men by funders and grant-givers on pain of losing income.

Service providers should know their law too.

It makes me think that some services will do anything to save themselves - even if it means sacrificing the women who turn to them for help.

YouJustDoYou · 01/05/2019 17:51

Well, they've made it clear the transwoman gets absolute priority.

AlwaysComingHome · 01/05/2019 17:53

I thought the point of rape crisis centres were to help women with their trauma

Nope, that would be to centre women. The purpose of rape crisis centres is to validate transwomen. It’s 2019.

YouJustDoYou · 01/05/2019 17:57

A trauma response doesn't always respond to "reason". A female who has experienced sexual abuse/trauma then comes face to face with an obviously male bodied person - I tell you, it's horrific. The fact that the woman and her opinions and feelings/experiences yet again holds no value whatsoever just makes me want to cry. We mean nothing when faced with males and their wants and their desires and their needs and their feelings. Women are yet again nothing.

VickyEadie · 01/05/2019 17:58

If they think women have much (or any) control over their trauma response they have no idea about trauma response, particularly in women traumatised as children. You don't feel safe because someone tells you to, you feel safe after months and possibly years of rebuilding your neural pathways in relationship with people who you trust.

This.

And this.

they've made it clear the transwoman gets absolute priority.

It's becoming pretty clear that in the Equality Act, despite what it actually says, trans trumps everything else. Race, religion, culture, disability, the lot. And 'sex' (women) is being openly dropped from protection at all.

We're talking about in the massive majority of cases, straight, white, educated, affluent, able bodied males.

theOtherPamAyres · 01/05/2019 18:04

I thought that this was a UK shelter, where the Equality Act and GRA applied. It's not.

It's the Cambridge Women's Center, Massachusets, USA.

ZebrasAreBras · 01/05/2019 18:32

CarolDanvers, I hate to say it, but I'm thinking the same.

twitter.com/Slutdesiwife/status/1123291235135967234 This person is apparently giving evidence to the Women & Equalities Committee today. A transwoman with a twitter handle "slutdesiwife" is advising the govt on self ID.

You know what's going to happen. The govt say they will consult women's groups about self ID - and the ones they consult will be the ones that have policies like these - and they will merrily say "no, no impact on women's rights" - because they'll be called transphobes and lose their funding if they don't. When the impact on women's rights is plaint to see, it's written into their policies. The impact is that women will be asked to leave if they are not comfortable sharing faciliies with male-bodied transwoman.

Our female biology - which feminists have long seen as the reason women are oppressed, is now being touted as some sort of privilege by TRAs - by which we're oppressing transwomen - because they want that biology. So women become the oppressors of males who identify as women.

We have to be the ones to leave the women's refuges because according to them, we are now the oppressors.

MeltedEggMum · 01/05/2019 18:36

We will go underground. Crisis centres will have to become decentralised and women will have to hide in attics and cellars.

Progress. Inclusion.

2BthatUnnoticed · 01/05/2019 18:44

Foxmuffin ‘cisgender’ was used in academic papers in the 90s to denote anyone who wasn’t trans. It’s now used as a political weapon against women.

The theory is that anyone “cis” enjoys privilege over anyone trans, hence people must centre and prioritise the trans person at all times (refer whiteboard).

But plenty of TW live as white, middle class professional males until their 40s before coming out as trans. And they are not required to make a single change to their body or presentation - just “ID as a woman.”

There is nothing to stop men from abusing this. Some TW take no steps to change their appearance - it can be impossible to know whether someone is a TW or a man.

ZebrasAreBras · 01/05/2019 18:46

I think making out born women are the oppressors of born males, just because those born males feel they should be women - or fetishize dressing up as women - might be the greatest trick the devil ever played.

I'm thinking I wouldn't advise anyone who has been raped to report it, or go to a rape crisis centre. Between the police, CPS, juries, and now male-bodied transwomen with penises taking priority over us in Rape Crisis centres and refuges - it's just a No.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 01/05/2019 18:55

Good grief ZebrasAreBras

That twitter thread - and this person is speaking to the Equalities committee about self ID? They're a walking demonstration of what women say is the problem!!! (hope someone has screenshots of it)

I hope that The Women & Equalities Committee have been made aware of the evidence today given by Joanna Cherry MP to The HUman Rights Parliamentary Committee about sexist, misogynistic harrassment/threats to women on Twitter specifically the use of 'terf'.

@AngryFeminist note the tweet says “British” but it’s actually US. Small comfort but it seems to officially be a “Women’s Shelter” rather than specifically for rape survivors.

That person has a lot to say about 'terfs' - real misogyny alongside torrents of porn. Wonder why the clueless Maria Miller thought they would be a good person to invite? Although I suppose they 'fit the bill' in terms of previous invitees.

EverardDigby · 01/05/2019 19:54

There are women's orgs that absolutely haven't drunk the KoolAid though, I work with one that's great.

ZebrasAreBras · 01/05/2019 19:57

Well they've had Jess Bradley & mates in already (thus fulfilling the alleged sex offender quotient...)

What next -- and adult baby? A furry?

MindYourLanguage · 01/05/2019 20:00

To me it seems that it is about overlapping human rights - it is going to take one almighty court case and a lot of debate to establish whether the right to same-sex spaces trumps other peoples right to be treated as the gender they feel they are.
I think until this is decided - we are constantly going to run into situations like this.

ThePurportedDoctoress · 01/05/2019 20:16

This is shameful. Gaslighting a distressed service user by insisting that a male guest is a woman, and asking her to leave if she can't go along with the fantasy - how does that help service users? These people have completely lost sight of what they are there for.

BlackForestCake · 01/05/2019 21:04

This is a disgrace. If this is the price for state funding then women's services would be better closing down and starting again from scratch with donations that don't come with misogynist strings attached.

Michelleoftheresistance · 01/05/2019 21:17

Crisis centres will have to become decentralised and women will have to hide in attics and cellars.

Like the any lesbian groups which have gone underground and meet in secret without advertising themselves because they were targeted, invaded and taken over by male born people who identified as lesbians and didn't want to be 'included' (many groups tried) but intended to take over, be centred, dictate what happened and what everyone else could talk about, and rendered the group useless to women. #objectiveachieved

#inclusiondontmakemefuckinglaugh

And yes. Ready and keen to join the crowdfund or support team for setting up the underground railroad for women in need of rape crisis and refuges that actually works for women.
