UPDATE: Gender Critical Women vs Labour Party, Court Claim Filed

Hi all,

For those who don't know and those who do... a group of anti-self-id feminists, mainly from the Labour Party raised more than £30,000 to take the party to court over the inclusion of self-identified transwomen on All-Woman-Shortlists.

I set up the crowdfunder 15 minths ago... was suspended almost immediately and have since been expelled by the party (COINCIDENCE?). But hey: they can expel me from the Labour Party but they can't expel me from the Labour Movement.

We appointed solicitors who appointed a barrister, Amanda Jones of St James St. Chambers... they went through all the correct pre-action protocol but Labour refused to put the question before a judge.

Our only option was then to take it to the High Court. The case is now finalised, printed out and will be filed with the court this week. Hopefully the issue of self-id impinging on women's right to participation, representation, safety, privacy and dignity has a higher public profile than when we started crowdfunding. Particularly with the immense contributions we have had from our women sports stars such as Martina and Sharron Davies.

I want to thank everyone on Mumsnet who has supported us: whether financially, politically or just with your kindness, solidarity and encouragement. We are mighty.

Brilliant, thank you for your persistence. As you say the public discourse has moved on a lot in those 15 months.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 25/04/2019 22:11

Yay Grin

GeordieGenes · 25/04/2019 22:12

You're amazing JJ. History willl remember you fondly. Smile

So did Labour just refuse to answer the questions theme? I don't understands?

Also, what will happen if you "win"? Will you get money or will they have to fix their AWS?

CloudRusting · 25/04/2019 22:15

Is the crowdfunded still open? I know we can’t link on here but if you let me know which platform I will go look.

HumberElla · 25/04/2019 22:28

This is great! Thank you for your persistence with this. I’d been wondering what had happened as it has indeed been ages.

Thank you Jen, have a lovely time with your kids Thanks

Whatisthisfuckery · 25/04/2019 23:56

This could be massive. Thank you for all your hard work on this. No doubt Labour have been stalling because their position is untenable, and of course they want to drag it out to cost you more money.

I had to relinquish my party membership early last year over this and now I’m politically homeless. It’s heartening to know that their woman erasing policies are being challenged and that there are courageous women who have our back.

Thank you, and the very best of luck. We’re all behind you.

Incredible news! I've had enough waffle and hand ringing about kindness and feelings, lets get some proper bloody case law established and start getting some boundaries around this mess. The labour party are an absolute disgrace atm.

AlunWynsKnee · 26/04/2019 00:02

Like Whatisthisfuckery my party membership has ended over this.
I hope your action goes well :)

tobee · 26/04/2019 00:17

Great to hear this update, and that you're pleased with how comprehensive the case is.

FannyCann · 26/04/2019 06:21

Great news. Looking forward to the newspaper reports. Grin Thank you for doing this.
What about the crowdfunder? £30K is mere pin money to lawyers and high court actions are super expensive. I feel more cash injections may be needed. Is the crowdfunder still open? I know it can't be linked here but Mumsnetters are generally pretty good at finding ways to spread important information. Please let us know where we can donate more if it is needed.

Natsku · 26/04/2019 06:27

Glad it's progressing

2BthatUnnoticed · 26/04/2019 06:42
