The OA on Netflix *Spoiler Warning - Thread title edited at OP's request*

There's a kid in the series "The OA" on Netflix who plays the character of "Michelle Vu/Buck Vu". In the series there are parallel universes. Michelle is female, but in one world she is a transboy called Buck.

The actor who plays this character is called 'Ian Alexander'. Ian also is a transboy. The casting call for the audition for the show explicitly asked for a transboy.
Here is a video of Ian on the Ellen show, announcing that they intend to start testosterone soon.
This youngster is 17.
I can't say what I'd like to because I will fall foul of the talk guidelines, but I can say that I am concerned that this young, biologically female person is proceeding down an unnecessary and damaging path, and possibly because they feel it is necessary to justify their job.
But everything about this child seems to suggest that what they need, is the opportunity to discuss honestly who they are in a way that allows them to be open to the possibility that they are not in fact a boy after all.

I quite like the OA even though it tips into pretentiousness. I’m not sure if the climax to Season One was beautiful or risible.

I’m interested though, if being transgender is innate, how can someone from a parallel world be trans when in our world they are not? They are biologically identical.

I liked it, it was just so bizarre..

Haven't managed to get into season 2 yet.. life keeps getting in the way.

Regards the actor - I think this is an issue - I think any young person in the spot light for a particular reason is vulnerable - just look at what's happened to so many child actors. I don't know what the solution is though. I think it's a good thing that at least this actor has waited until 18, although on the whole, I think that cross-sex hormones are a terrible idea, particularly females on testosterone as the damage they do is both largely unstudied, and (for females at least - when it comes to males I understand oestrogen is less dramatic) permanent.

I think you can say this. And I think I can also second your saying this.

Barracker · 18/04/2019 14:42

Did you watch the video, Lang?
I hadn't seen the actor outside of their performance. I found it quite shocking to see them as themselves and then hear them declare their testosterone plans.
It's a very sharp disconnect between what I see and hear of their persona, and what they say they intend to do.

Just watching now. I'm going to weep tears of blood, aren't I?

Emmerdale is doing a ‘top surgery’ storyline right now.

I don’t know what her the actor has had the surgery their self yet but if they haven’t then there will be incredible pressure on them to do so.

They can hardly turn around now and say ‘Nope, that’s not for me.’

AlwaysComingHome · 18/04/2019 15:04

I liked it, it was just so bizarre..

It’s one of those series that is continually surprising. It’s hypnotic in the way Twin Peaks is. Terms like ‘good’ and ‘bad’ aren’t really adequate.

I must admit that I thought it might have been cancelled after Season One because Season Two seemed to take forever to appear. Maybe Jason Issacs was tied up doing Star Trek Discovery and they had to wait for him to become available.

I think you should ask MNHQ to add a spoiler warning to the title as you've essentially given away the big reveal at the start of season 2!

But I've seen this actor, they're also in a couple of Netflix films and so obviously female - I hope they are ok and aren't being pushed into hormone therapy before they know their own self

Cocolapew · 18/04/2019 16:02

Do I have it right they had had no T or surgery yet in that clip? So why are they trans? Because they say so?

SignMeUp · 18/04/2019 16:05

Looks like Ellen is trying not to say the wrong thing.
She must be aware of the pressures on young lesbians?

Barracker · 18/04/2019 16:09

Oh shoot, I have sort of given away a spoiler you're right. I'll ask MNHQ to edit the title.
